I suck at math. So I hope to god nobody is double-checking my word count estimates. They don’t matter that much, really. I mean, I fuck up simple addition and subtraction. I get it wrong, sometimes, even if I have a calculator handy.

I’m disgusted by many of my fellow small presses. Running a small press is difficult and expensive. It’s also a calling. You start a small press because you want to champion literature. Now, every book is a gamble. It’s a gamble if you’re running Random House! But they can survive a failure. A small press […]

The idea for my 10,000 words in a day project came to me in a dream. I woke up and scribbled down titles for articles, then drank a glass of water, and then was very angry because the house was cold and I really had to take a piss. I look forward to old age […]

At Monday’s happy hour, friends who I consider to be intelligent, informed, and plugged in didn’t even know what I was talking about. “What? What […]
AUTHOR’S NOTE: I was headed out for a bike ride when the news that iconic film director George A. Romero had died at the age of 77. It immediately weighed heavy on my heart and mind. My legs felt wobbly, so much so that I worried whether I should go for the bike ride or […]

In my new effort to get healthy I decided to stop drinking vodka for breakfast and, instead, go on a walk in the neighborhood across the street. It’s a four lane street, busy all day, quiet at night, but a clear demarcation between my neighborhood – townhomes, high rises, and the metro station – and […]

I had this crazy dream where I ran for the Montgomery County, MD County Council. Like so many of my dreams (which, usually, are always either about doing household chores or defending a small town in Western Maryland during the zombie apocalypse), the vivid detail was so convincing that I woke up and immediately looked […]
