Top 20 Sci-Fi Movies: Intro & Nacho’s List

It started as a lark in the forums in early January – what are the 20 best sci-fi movies of all time? I set up one basic rule (which I then broke in my list): Franchises can only be represented by one film. Cassander, Rottingcorpse, and I all produced lists. Then, over the next few months, we debated the validity of the lists, and started marathon sessions to rewatch the films we selected. The lists all evolved and, now, we’ll spend this week presenting our defenses.

Throughout today, we’ll see two posts in addition to this one. Both Rottingcorpse and Cassander will be introducing their lists. Then, between Tuesday and Thursday, we’ll each defend our more controversial choices. Right now, the plan is to end on Friday with a conversation on the movies that crept onto each of our lists. We’ll see if that happens.

So, since we have a long piece from Cass scheduled in a couple of hours, I’ll keep this short. Here’s my list:

Star Wars

Alien

Moon

Sunshine

Star Trek: TMP

Star Trek: 2009

Pandorum

Back to the Future

A Clockwork Orange

T2

The Road Warrior

Planet of the Apes (1968)

Fifth Element

Westworld

Dark Star

They Live

The Quiet Earth

Stargate

The Time Machine (original)

First Men in the Moon

  1. Hmm, no (orig) Invasion of the Body Snatchers…The Day the Earth Stood Still…But I’ll take Dark Star over Blade Runner, and the Original Time Machine over Time After Time…Keep up the good work Nacho!
