{"id":85,"date":"2008-05-13T10:48:23","date_gmt":"2008-05-13T15:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greatsociety.org\/?p=85"},"modified":"2018-10-31T12:46:55","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T16:46:55","slug":"macgyvers-in-trouble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greatsociety.org\/?p=85","title":{"rendered":"MacGyver&#8217;s in trouble"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When I bitch about my job, I know that it&#8217;s all my fault.<span>  <\/span>I\u2019m the one who decided to get a liberal arts degree, then not continue my schooling.<span>  <\/span>I\u2019m the one who lacks the typical career ladder ambition that all of my lovely achiever friends seem to come by naturally.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">My job, like so many others, is unrewarding.<span>  <\/span>It doesn\u2019t further my life in any way, it doesn\u2019t help others.<span>  <\/span>You can literally do this job with your brain removed and a sickly hamster in its place.<span>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The question, then, is what\u2019s the problem?<span>  <\/span>If I\u2019ve made the choice, it means I\u2019m not really trapped.<span>  <\/span>And if I\u2019ve chosen to sit somewhere and be a dummy, then shouldn\u2019t I be happy?<span>  <\/span>Because I\u2019m not only a dummy here, but I\u2019ve been on work stoppage since 2003.<span>  <\/span>So I\u2019m a dummy who has no responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The problem is that I\u2019m not able to goof off comfortably, and I\u2019m feeling a bit too old for the cloak and dagger shit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The work stoppage consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never answering non-monitored phone calls.<span>  <\/span>For 4.5 hours each day, we\u2019re assigned to the phones.<span>  <\/span>Talking to an endless wave of fuckups.<span>  <\/span>Those calls are watched by the team of supervisors, so we have to be on our toes.<span>  <\/span>But once I\u2019m off the record?<span>  <\/span>Fuck the phone.<span>  <\/span><\/li>\n<li>Never checking my voicemail.<span>  <\/span>It deletes automatically after a month.<\/li>\n<li>Never respond to emails, unless it\u2019s absolutely vital.<span>  <\/span>Vital emails include ones where one of the supervisors have been CC\u2019d, or where my gut instinct tells me that the problem could escalate and get back to a boss.<\/li>\n<li>Never do paperwork.<span>  <\/span>There are a ton of assigned tasks, and those are also monitored and tracked by the bosses.<span>  <\/span>But little in-house shit that\u2019s a borderline favor for a co-worker?<span>  <\/span>Trash it.<\/li>\n<li>Attempt to watch at least five hours of TV or read a book online each day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There\u2019s the problem!<span>  <\/span>That last point.<span>  <\/span>I\u2019ve been trying to work my way through <em>MacGyver<\/em> on the CBS website for weeks and I haven\u2019t yet finished season one.<span>  <\/span>My friend with the far more respectable, high paying, and important job is almost on the third season!<span>  <\/span>But me?<span>  <\/span>No luck.<span>  <\/span>Why not?<span>  <\/span>Well, besides the phone calls, there\u2019s the constant nattering from my co-workers.<span>  <\/span>Shouting jokes through the vents, endless visits and chattering, people wandering around bored out of their minds trying to get into my business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Is it my fault that you\u2019re bored?<span>  <\/span>The phone calls, alone, make me crazy.<span>  <\/span>But not being left alone at all for the 8.5 hours I\u2019m sitting here has almost driven me to Xanax.<span>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I secretly enjoy having a dummy job.<span>  <\/span>I just wish it was more of a dummy job because, come on, there\u2019s six more seasons of <em>MacGyver<\/em> to get through!<span>  <\/span>These people in my department need to leave me the fuck alone.<span>  <\/span>Ideally, I should be able to put my feet up at noon and just watch TV for six hours.<span>  <\/span>But nobody here has any respect, that\u2019s the problem.<span>  <\/span>Maybe if I haul in my old dorm room fridge, fill it with beer, then take my pants off and really get into it.<span>  <\/span>Would people leave me alone then?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Nacho, what are you doing?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Shut the fuck up, MacGyver\u2019s in trouble!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">All of this is pointless, because <em>MacGyver<\/em> was pretty gay in the later seasons.<span>  <\/span>I know there\u2019s nothing but disappointment in my future.<span>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But I\u2019ve known that since high school.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I bitch about my job, I know that it&#8217;s all my fault.
