Who Ya Gonna Call?
« on: July 10, 2015, 05:59:35 PM »
I started a Ghostbusters thread because, why not? We all agree the first one is genius and the second one is far less so.

This reboot looks like it cold be lots of fun. The casting is certainly something I approve of.

Yeah...I've recently become curious. (Also, we can talk about the cartoon, which I loved!)

Everyone seems to be taking a dump on these pictures, but I've come to the conclusion that the internet just likes to bitch. Or maybe it's sexism, which is also stupid.

I think this is *exactly* how you do a reboot. It's familiar enough that you recognize the DNA, but the all female cast is obviously going give it a different vibe. I think Wiig and McCarthy are both hilarious, so it'll be funny.

It is sexism. Lots of talk about that... And the "women in entertainment" issue is an issue...

Fucking teasers for trailers make me grind my teeth.

Though since today is the "end of the world" as predicted in Ghostbusters II,  I'll let it slide.

So glad you posted that. The best part of Ghostbusters II.

Um... So, I'm happy with this. I think. I feel more confused than upset or excited. But it's a good confused! ...I think...

Ugh...No.  Just no.  Some things should not be remade.  I'll probably have to see it because Mrs. Sirharles is a Melissa McCarthy fan, but it will be under protest.

I think the problem I have is that the entire trailer is scenes from the first two movies, except with women and better effects. This looks like a Force Awakens-style rehash of the exact same plotline.

This looks like a Force Awakens-style rehash of the exact same plotline.

I want the record to state that I said that somewhere, probably in the Star Wars thread.

I like this. Confession time: Ghostbusters was never sacred to me. The first one is very, very good and one of the movies I almost know by heart. (Well, used to know by heart.) The second one is almost an embarrassment. Remaking it is fine, mostly because it was never concept fully explored to it's potential in sequels because nobody want to make one.

I like the trailer, though as Nacho says, it's a rehash of the first movie. I like the girls though. I like that I know all four of those girls, those "archetypes" if you will. Not to get too socially conscious because the sooner the world burns, the better, but from the trailer, I see four women that it'll be good for young American girls to see.

The movie has to be funny. And I don't think it'll be as on the edge as the original. Murray was in his prime and his comedy was an assault. (Aykroyd too.) This feels like it'll be safer, though McCarthy has a bit of that Murray wildness in her. She's Venkman right? I know they have different names but it seems obvious they're inhabiting the personas of the original.

I approve.

I think, in fact, your full prediction was that everyone is going to use The Force Awakens method from now on. Which is...disheartening.

(I realized, by the way, that Into Darkness is an example of The Force Awakens method, except done horribly wrong. So we've already had the cautionary tale of this model before the model became a model!)

I don't know. I have a hard time opposing this, as well, but my reasons are a bit more nebulous and feel closer to simple defeat in the face of reboot-itis than anything else. Like this is the last straw. What's the point of crying? Go ahead and reboot Citizen Kane except from the POV of the sled. Fine. Whatever. Why fight this? Vote Trump.

Any Ghostbusters remake should have been a lone Bill Murray in a retirement home.
There will come a day for every man when he will relish the prospect of eating his own shit. That day has yet to come for me.

That's every Murray movie from the last 10 years.

Soooo... the first trailer showed hints of promise. This looks bad.
