1Q84
« on: October 22, 2011, 08:15:51 PM »
I'm sad we don't have a devoted Murakami thread... We have an Iain Banks thread! And Murakami is, easily, equal to Banks in my mind...as far as authors I religiously follow, no matter what they release. And 1Q84 is a book I've bene anticipating since it was announced last summer...more than any other book, really.

I suppose I'll flesh this thread out with Murakami history and books and all that...but, right now, I'm just sitting here anxiously awaiting the release of 1Q84. After several years of kind of cooling his heels, this is a big blow-out freak-out. A thousand pages of Murakami goodness... Reviewers love it, hate it, can't figure it out, are changed by it. It's real Cult of Murakami stuff -- just like the old days. A return to roots? A bookend for his ground-breaking Wild Bird Chronicle? The start of a new path?

I know Monkey will be reading it along with me, so the real purpose of this thread will be so you can watch the two of us go completely insane, wander the streets of Tokyo in our minds looking for lost cats, and fixate on women's ears.

Here's the book trailer:

Yeah, I'm really stoked about this - can't wait for it to arrive in my post.
There will come a day for every man when he will relish the prospect of eating his own shit. That day has yet to come for me.

http://www.themillions.com/2011/10/a-novelist-unmoored-from-himself-haruki-murakamis-1q84.htm

A nice review from The Millions, largely launching from the long-sustained shout from Japan that Murakami get a Nobel, but also discussing what I agree to be Murakami's problem -- he fell off the rails for most of the last decade. Returning to Japan in the wake of the subway attacks and the earthquake, he wrote the excellent After the Quake shorts collection in 2000... And he lost his mojo. His next three outings were mediocre, lost in the "town of cats." Then he seemed to abandon fiction. He threw himself into his hobbies -- which is something that What I Talk About When I Talk About Running deals with.

Two chapters in, dealing with the female and male characters: already hooked. It's good. I've a feeling it's going to shape up into an epic Wind Up Bird Chronicle-esque piece.

Yeah, that's what the reviewers are saying (warning) about it.

Mine should arrive today. I'll probably start tonight!

Bah! If it's as good as Wind Up Bird Chronicle I shall be quite happy.

I don't know about the UK version, but the US hardback is beautiful... And I love how the book is a journey even in the way it's been laid out. The "Also by" listing scrolls calmly along eight pages, each featuring different art and a letter/number from the title. Down the rabbithole indeed...

Oh, god...and the copyright page info scrolls along the bottom of those eight pages. And the reversed page numbers! And the little "1Q84" block emblem on each page... I want to fucking hump whoever did the layout. This book is beautiful just to look at.

Sat down with chapter one and was instantly sucked in.
