Television
« on: May 18, 2009, 12:36:08 PM »
So...I bought my wife a TV for mother's day.

She wanted one, 'cause she's cool like that.

Got a sweet deal on a 42" LCD HD: $600 including shipping!

The TV is very pretty.

I was also amazed at the difference between component cables and an HDMI cable.

http://www.tigerdirect.com  Top of the front page...still there!

Apparently some hotel chain went out of business and they got these things on the very cheap.

HDMI is the bomb!  No screwing that fucking coax bullshit in, plus it's a pretty standard format which means most laptops can just plug right in, no hassle no fuss.

I can't believe how much the price has dropped even since I bought mine.  I got a 32" (or is it 37"?) Samsung for $900 last July and back then, that was a cheap price.  They're dropping like rocks!

Now you just need a Blu-ray player for Father's Day. :)

Gay.
There will come a day for every man when he will relish the prospect of eating his own shit. That day has yet to come for me.

I left him at level 70-something.

CByrd17 on the Playstation Network!

Not that I've spent a lot of time there...playing upconverted PS1 & PS2 games through HDMI on the new TV is...very pretty.

YES!  Nice... I'm still trying to amp up our wifi signal enough that I can use my PS3 online down in the depths.  I am Katzenjammer06.

What games do you have?  Any you really like?

I've got shitloads of games and I've played a bunch that I've since traded, so I've got a decent idea of what's what... although I haven't picked up much since Resident Evil 5 and Killzone.  I've been hearing things about Infamous for a few months now and the reviews all seem to give it 9 and above.

I just have Metal Gear Solid 4 that came with it...and like 30-40 older system games.

I'm probably looking to get Fallout 3 based on the reviews here.  I dunno what else...definitely open to suggestions.  It takes me a loooong time to play through games with the kiddos around though.

Yeah, I hear ya.  If you haven't played Fallout 3 yet, then I would say definitely give it a go... the sad thing is that it's actually a better port on the 360 and PC, but whatever... it's certainly more than passable on the PS3.

Is your system backwards compatible?  I'm confused where Sony is on that whole mess.  For a while they were doing it with all systems, then they stopped, then they started up again with the Metal Gear systems and now... well, I dunno where they are.  If yours has backwards compatibility, I would definitely recommend both God of War games.  They are incredible, even for PS2 games and they're super cheap... $10 or $15.

My favorite games so far have probably been some of the arcade titles.  Pixeljunk Monsters and Eden are both pretty fun.  I LOVED Puzzle Quest and played that for hours.  There's lots of good stuff in the arcade if you're looking to spend $10 or $15 instead of going out and dropping $60 on a bigger title.

Little Big Planet is fantastic... just a fun game.  Your kids would probably like that one too, depending how old they are.  You can design your own boards and stuff.  It's like half Mario Brothers and half erector set.

Killzone 2 is a must have if you're into first person shooters.  It's loads of fun, incredibly violent and packed to the gills with action.  There's no other game like it on the system.

Motorstorm is a pretty great too.  It's a very fast, very fun, very muddy arcade racer.  I only have the first one, but it's got incredible graphics and I'm told the sequel is even better.

Beyond that, I dunno... Resident Evil 5 looks fantastic and is fun once you get into it, but it has a few frustrating quirks that tended to ruin my experience with it (you can't shoot while running, so when you try to kill people you stand still... shit like that).  Farcry 2 is fun to a certain point and then you'll get sick of it... but maybe it's a bargain bin title by now.

If I can think of any others, I'll put them up.

Good good...I'll be getting into some of these as time goes by.

I specifically got the Metal Gear Solid pack, because that includes one of the older systems.  The new ones are not back-compatable at all (but are cheaper).  I had to support my old stable of games, so I went with that.

Basically, Sony released the first PS3's with PS2 chips in them...that was too expensive to manufacture and to sell....

So they went with software emulation of the PS2 chip in the next version...that turned out to be too expensive to sell (but cheaper to manufacture).  I have this version.

So they cut the price and the compatibility went by the wayside on the latest versions.

All the MGS4 bundles are older systems.
