Newsday: Literary Edition
« on: October 30, 2008, 12:46:43 PM »
Okay, a single thread to wrap up all the one off posts that dominate this forum.

Starting with:  http://www.nevermore2009.com/

From November through 2009, Baltimore is having a year-long Edgar Allan Poe celebration.

I'm especially interested in this one:

Quote
March 27
Time TBA
Westminster Hall and Catacombs
CASK OF AMONTILLADO WINE TASTING AMONG THE BONES
Sample the wines mentioned in Poe's stories while enjoying the ambience of the Westminster catacombs. Witness Montressor luring Fortunado to a gruesome death in a theatrical performance of The Cask of Amontillado. Enjoy characters from Poe's stories as they mingle among the living.
Additional details to be announced.

wait...isn't November NaNoWriMo?

who wants to sign up with me and do it?  i know nacho's doing his "write one page then have a hard wank" a day.  i'm thinking now might be a better time than ever to write a novel in a month.  maybe i'll even just post it on GS as i go.  man, this could be kick ass.  it's not going to be coherent or streamlined, but i bet one of my notebook-ed ideas could provide me enough to hack out a 30,000 word novel in november.  i'll put a think on it.

Please do post it on GS.

But I'm not going to join you.  I'm wanking to a page a day.

"november?  It's NaNoWriMo.  ha ha, those twits!"

*clicks on thanksgiving recipes*

"man, i should really write something.  it's been about 50 years since i abandoned my last novel 5/6ths of the way in."

*buys beer*

"I wonder if andrew secretly hates me*

*passes out*

Rowling is basically creating her own Facebook. (This is, by the way, the coming thing. Been reading a lot in the trades about creating "Facebook like communities" for popular books. Essentially exclusive, glorified fan pages.)

Quote
Minutes ago, J.K. Rowling finally announced her plans behind Pottermore, the mysterious website that appeared a week hence with only a “Coming Soon” sign to warns readers and fans.

It seems that Rowling is intent on pursuing the life of the books within the Harry Potter community. Starting in October, fans will be able to join Pottermore and experience the series in a whole new way. According to the The Telegraph, this site will be part social networking forum and part computer game, where a whole new generation of readers will be able to follow Harry’s footsteps online, beginning with their own sorting by the famous rhyming hat.

New information on the universe that never made it into the books will be available on the Pottermore site; part of the reason for bringing this project to the public was to give Rowling a place to leave addition information about her characters and the wizarding world for the reading community to discover. It is unclear how this information will be unlocked, but it is part of the interactive experience Pottermore will create. While fans still might be treated to a Harry Potter encyclopedia, now there is a new way to learn more about the world they know and love.

In addition, Pottermore will also offer the Harry Potter books in ebook format, bringing Harry further into the digital world. You can register for a special challenge—one million lucky fans who beat it will receive the opportunity to try the site out as early as July 31st (Harry and Rowling’s birthday).

Catching up on the weekend's news... Looks like we're not too far away from a "reboot" of Harry Potter. Either a next generation at Hogwarts something or other... Or a prequel. More details will slowly emerge via Pottermore, and the project may take the form of a show or movie series and not books... But there's something buzzing down the publishing pipe.

Um...what?

Quote
I'm serious. King has officially announced his next book will be titled Dr. Sleep and be a sequel to The Shining. This would be fine -- weird, slightly upsetting, but technically fine -- if King hadn't read a passage of Dr. Sleep at George Mason University recently, and it was all about -- and I shit you not -- vampires disguised as elderly retired people traveling the country in motor homes and campers. The video of the reading is above, but don't expect anything to tie it to The Shining in there -- it's not like they check into The Overlook Hotel at the end of the passage or anything. Nope, just vampires driving things with "Ask me about my grandkids!" bumper stickers. It's a horror story, all right, I'm just not sure King isn't part of the narrative here. Thanks to Capsulesn'Coffee for the tip. (Via Bloody-Disgusting)
