Going Retro
« on: July 09, 2008, 04:38:03 PM »
Because I just have so much free time, I "acquired" the Duke Nukem 3D high-res fancy whatever port thing and Diablo II plus extensions last night.

I haven't played Duke Nukem since college, and I never played Diablo II...though everyone was always playing that.  So I'm now looking forward to going home and pretending it's the 1990's.

God, give me Spore.  And GTAIV!

I'd love to do GTAIV, but Team Fortress 2 is really holding me in its grips. Getting achievements is totally fun. Like "Weenie Roast" -- set two scouts on fire a the same time! Oh, so much fun.

Wolfenstein 3D and Duke were the first games I played secretly while my parents were asleep. I'd hide in bed for a few hours and then sneak down to the computer and play them until 4am.

GTA4 is worth it. TF2 is for nerds.

If it wasn't for Bethesda making this, I'd predict a massive fail.
There will come a day for every man when he will relish the prospect of eating his own shit. That day has yet to come for me.

They're not actually making it, they're just the studio. So...still possible.

Though I loved Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Am I alone there?

So...out today for $60 bucks. I thought I might try a...uh...preview version before I let nostalgia take over my wallet.

It's a 43 gig download! and:

Quote
[ System Requirements ]
OS: 64-bit Windows 7/Windows 8
CPU: Intel Core i7 or equivalent AMD
RAM: 4 GB
GPU: GeForce 460, ATI Radeon HD 6850
HDD: 50 GB available space minimum

Um...

Someone gleefully pointed this out:

Quote
A single copy of this game is the size of 18,802.017 Wolfenstein 3D's.

Bethesda tries to downplay this fuckery:

So I guess we can sit back and watch the Next Great Gaming Disaster this week!

It gets decent but not great reviews, an unremarkable shooter with fun story telling.

Oh... Hi Steam sale! And unexpected hand-sold book purchases via the Square store to pay for it... And my extra $10 off so it's now only $20 of funny money that I write off on taxes.

Wolfenstein purchased!

I must admit that I consider this purchase simply as a Brand Loyalty thing, considering that you could easily argue that the first third of my life was spent playing Wolfenstein 3D.

Haha... At 14mbs, it still has two hours to go before it's done downloading!

So 3D is, like, 3 megs, right?

Most next-gen games are now around 30-50gbs. It's all those texture files and high quality audio.

And it's fucking awesome. It's like a Choose Your Own Adventure movie.

Playing Wolfenstein 3D on my phone back when it came out for iOS was the moment I realized that I'm a full generation away from my childhood:

1) I have a supercomputer in my pocket that is connected at all times to the entire world's knowledge and, AND, it plays the game I was obsessed with as a kid. In my pocket.
2) Within a few minutes I was bored with the game that I literally dreamed about playing as a kid. Something happened in the intervening 20 years, eh?
