Terminator Franchise
« on: February 07, 2008, 04:53:48 PM »
Am I blind or do we not have a thread for T4?

Anyway:

Quote
Charlie's Angels director McG recently spoke with both iF Magazine and The213.Net at the Warner Bros. Home Video 85th Anniversary celebration about the fourth installment in the "Terminator" franchise and revealed some interesting new stuff.

First off, it's current status - "[We're] prepping the picture right now. The script is largely done, whether or not we're able to prep off of it, obviously we want to continue to work on it, punch it up and we're hoping for an expedient finish to the writer's strike. But I've got my fingers crossed that in a week or two it will be over."

As for tone - "It's very much in keeping what the studio has done with Batman. We're respectful of the first pictures in creating a new language, while honoring the mythology, and I felt it would be a great time to play upon some of the [Isaac] Asimov ideas, some of the Phillip K. Dick ideas. It felt like a good time to tell a story about humanity and what it means to make us all human."

McG confirmed Christian Bale will indeed play the heroic John Connor, and hinted that Josh Brolin might be in the running to play the film's Terminator - "It's a decidedly masculine role and we live in a time, where a lot of actors are very effeminate and there's a masculine component to the role and there are guys out there like Russell Crowe and Eric Bana who bring a good physicality and do what they do, but I don't know if they're exactly right at the end of the day. Josh Brolin is a very exciting actor, so we'll see."

The action is set in 2019, post-Judgment Day, but conceded that "there are indeed some timeline issues" with respect to the continuity established by both the film and recent TV series - "We're going to what we can to respect the mythology" he says.

Finally, what about appearance by the T-800 (Arnie) or the liquid metal T-1000 from "Terminator 2" - "There will be a suggestion of the liquid metal development and a suggestion of the T-800 development. It's going to be a tip of the hat. We're undecided if there's going to be an actual appearance."

It's also a big fuck you to the series (which currently has Skynet planning the construction of Terminators by hoarding the necessary resources throughout the timeline, which I think is brilliant).

I think there's some stuff about T4 in the Sarah Connor Chronicles thread. Other than that, this is it.

A fourth Terminator film is still in the works ... it's just that it will have a slightly different name.

In a release about the new film, studio Warner Bros. is now referring to the McG-directed film as "Untitled Terminator Project," which seems to indicate that the studio has dumped the "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" title that had been used in connection with the production for some time.

It's not clear what precipitated a change in the name, but it doesn't seem to be affecting the plot much, if at all. The film will be the start of a three-installment series that will focus on Christian Bale as the popular character John Connor as well as Sam Worthington as Marcus following the apocalypse that allows the machines to take over.

Bale will be the fourth primary actor to take on the role following Eddie Furlong, Nick Stahl and now Thomas Dekker, who stars in the Fox series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," which just completed its first season.

The movie, unlike the series, will pick up apparently where 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" left off, and is written by Michael Ferris and John Brancato.

The film is set for release May 22, 2009, just a couple weeks following the current scheduled premiere of "Star Trek" by Paramount Pictures.

Saw this in front of Dark Knight, as well.  I'll only watch this for Bale because, otherwise, it makes me want to drunk and cry.

Really? It's only a teaser, but it looks so vastly different from other Terminator movies, I feel like I can accept it somehow.

It's what we've been asking for since T2 -- a movie that takes place during the war.  But the franchise has started to get too big and complicated.  Which parallel universe of what might have been will this movie take place in?

Well, this'll be the parallel universe where Marty McFly actually sleeps with his mother.

That's a parallel universe we've all been to, Matt.

Thread is now about Lea Thompson circa mid-1980's.

Hey!  Terminator 5 news!

Quote
Terminator Salvation doesn't hit theaters until June but producers have already decided to make a follow-up slated for release in 2011. Salvation director McG will be involved in this fifth picture in the machine freak franchise, with star Christian Bale contractually committed to play John Connor in up to three movies.

When Terminator rights were acquired last year by Halcyon bosses Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, they hoped to make a new trilogy of films to complement the original Arnold Schwarzenegger threesome.  According to Variety, fan buzz encouraged Anderson and Kubicek to pull the trigger even before they saw how Salvation did at the box office.

Speaking over the weekend at the Dubai International Film Festival, Kubicek said: "We feel the time is now to start shaping the next part of this."
