The Charlie Brooker Thread
« on: February 01, 2007, 10:50:20 PM »
EDIT FROM NACHO, JULY 2012 -- COMBINED THE TWO SCREENWIPE THREADS AND DEAD SET INTO A CATCH-ALL BROOKER EMPORIUM!

Stumbled across this on YouTube. It's a Beeb show about... TV.

Something Nacho and RC would appreciate, I think.

For those of you not taking Tyson's advice, get yourselves moving on this show.  The third season is underway and just as amazing as the first two.

I'm just going to keep bumping this thread until everybody downloads this show and watches all three seasons.

In fact... Send a blank DVD and postage to the SFWP addy and I'll burn this show for you, if you can't find it.

Well...end of season 3.  But:

Quote from: Charlie Brooker
Well, Screenwipe's back later this year with a massively increased budget. And coming up next on BBC Four, Mark Lawson fights a horse to the death in a razorwire thunderdome.

(Lawson does sort of one-on-one interviews with minor celebrities, and loads of other whoring shit.  Ran across this trying to dig up info on him so you all could appreciate how nice it would be to see him battle a horse to the death:

What's great about Brooker is that he can't go three episodes (or interviews/rants) without going on about Deadwood. Everyone watching this show?

It gives me great hope, for example, that Brooker notes how heavy and Shakespearian the dialog is in Deadwood... I kept quiet about that because I just thought I was dumb.

Charlie Brooker's Dead Set

Quote
Britain has a big problem. The dead are returning to life and attacking the living. The people they kill get up and kill – and it’s spreading like wildfire. Curiously, there are a few people left in Britain who aren’t worried about any of this – that’s because they’re the remaining contestants in Big Brother. Cocooned in the safety of the Big Brother house, they’re blissfully unaware of the horrific events unfolding outside. Until an eviction night when all hell breaks loose.

Kelly, (Jaime Winstone) the production runner working on Big Brother finds herself caught in the impossible position of trying to fend off the walking dead alongside the remaining housemates, Davina herself, a host of former Big Brother housemates, her producer boss Patrick (Andy Nyman) and boyfriend Riq (Riz Ahmed).

Over the ensuing days, in a cruel reflection of the game show they thought they were entering, the contestants fall victim, one by one, to the hungry masses outside. Staying alive requires teamwork – which is tricky when you’re a group specifically selected by TV producers to wind each other up.

Airing every night, and ending on Halloween.  The show is awesome.  I hate Big Brother so much...this is exactly what I want to happen to everyone who watches it, stars in it, and produces it.

Gory, violent, cathartic, pop-culture addled fun.  It's actually less comedy and more zombie apocalypse...which is good, because comedy zombies was good for Shaun of the Dead, but then it needed to stop.  There's no comedy about these zombies.

Plus, we not only get to see fucking Davina McCall (pictured) get gored...but she turns into a brain eating zombie and goes on a rampage.  Beautiful!

Episode two.  Not just trapped inside the Big Brother house, but we have some survivors on the outside as well.  So shots of apocalyptic England help tide me over while I wait for Survivors to air...

Episode three.

This show is beyond awesome.  I mean...where to begin?

Pop culture for the refined zombie movie connoisseur?  Check.

Commentary on modern society?  Check.

People behaving normally and doing smart things that are totally unprecedented in the zombie movie genre?  Check.

A totally fresh and new take on the zombie genre while also being deeply rooted in all the traditional stuff?  Check.

Hot British women?  Check.

Gore and violence?  Check.

Post-apocalyptic goodness where you break into houses and get supplies and all that fun stuff?  Check.

Tight writing, great acting, and genuinely entertaining from top to bottom?  Check.

Fuck...what an awesome episode.  Intense.  I'm sorry this is just five days...this should be an ongoing series.

It's astounding, really. This is the best treatment the zombie apocalypse genre has ever gotten.  I should have been in bed a couple hours ago, but I'm still up because episode three is simply rattling around in my head.  I was out of my chair and shouting.
