I have this secret dream where I can walk or ride my bike to work without dying on the streets.  And this trail would do it.  The section that stretches from just outside Fort Totten to Union Station is really awesome.  A nice, smooth, rail corridor trail.

Chevy Chase Lake is a sleepy little spot near the weekend job. Low-level residential, single story store-fronts... Now we'll get:

They proposed 4.3 million new square feet of development, including 900,000 square feet of commercial office space, 200,000 square feet of retail space, 3000 new residential units (over 3 million square feet), and a hotel with 150 rooms.

Montgomery County is speeding up approvals for new types of mixed-use zoning to allow for a smoother redevelopment process in areas like Kensington, Wheaton and White Flint. But some longtime citizens say the changes are making the county too urban . . .

Rose Crenca, a Silver Spring resident and a 1980s County Council member, said she feared the mixed-use zones would encroach upon single-family neighborhoods and conflict with the suburban nature of the county.

"This is the tip of the iceberg and there is a movement afoot to change what we have here," she said. "Stop messing around with Montgomery County -- if you don't like a suburban county, move to where it is very urban."

George Mason University ranked Maryland as last in the nation in providing personal freedom to it's citizens.

According to the study, Maryland's imposition on personal freedom include the second strictest gun laws in  the country, fairly harsh marijuana laws, extensive auto and road regulations and severe labor regulations.

Political science Professor John Dedie says most people don't care, but believes surveys like this matter to politicians. Dedie says "It gives them an idea where voters are thinking and what's on their mind. As far as how they view the roles of government. But the other factor is I would be interested in knowing in this survey how many of these people who feel their freedoms are being infringed upon, don't even vote."

One Marylander says he feels very free in this state. "It's not the government that compromises my freedom, it's the banks, it's Wall Street, it's credit card companies. The government protects me from those superior forces. i feel very free in Maryland."
