Yeah yeah, it's hyped because it was made on $7,000 by some unemployed engineer or something.

But fuck all that. Regardless of budget, Primer is a fucking incredible movie. It's a time-travel movie done right. Stunning. I've got the torrent up here.

It's the first intelligent Sci Fi movie I've seen in a long, long time.

It's almost impossible to wrap your head around, but once you do, it's very clever. You'll have to watch it ten times to "get it". I cheated and read some blubs around the internet from people who have watched it ten times.

Just watch it. Good shit.

(P.S. I encoded it with h.264, which is a kick butt new codec. MPlayer and VLC handle it just fine. The file is 572mb and deals with the film nicely.)

The most off-the-wall sci-fi flick I ever saw was "Liquid Sky." It's an 80s film shot in New York City's punk scene and directed by a Russian defector. It has something to offend everyone: gutter language, crude sex, battling dykes, hard drug dealing and addiction, miniature UFOs and aliens who suck the endorphins out of people who are cuming. The film was VERY popular on college campuses and I saw it at the University of Hawaii. No big-name stars, but interesting performances and a totally bizarre plot.

What makes Primer so good is that it isn't a bizarre plot. The film does an excellent job of making the characters and situation totally believeable. They don't have some mad scientist who comes up with a big machine with stupid lights and all that crap. It's just some engineer guys living ordinary lives etc.

Just watch it. Woo!

Found the original thread.  Point me to whatever I need to play your retarded special Mac user's codec on a regular computer.  Don't say Quicktime.

QuickTime.

Normally I use XVID, but I was too tempted to try out the new codec.

Wait - MPlayer plays it just fine.

Use that, you luddite.

VLC plays it, MPlayer plays it, QuickTime plays it - what more do you want?

God, not my loss!

Nothing plays it this side, and I can't find a proper download site for the codec. I did, however, find an .avi version of the movie.

I know it's new and cool and everyone's talking about it... But remember that I'm stupid.  If you're using something that's all fancy point me to where I have to go to grab it.

Here, found the answer buried in an "I'm an Apple Elitist!" message board:

Is there a way to playback in windows? I have an H.264 codec, and I've been using MPC to playback QT media, but it gives a QT error and VLC just crashes.

Install the moonlight or Nero decoders. I recommend the moonlight one since its free, while you must own Nero to use it's decoder. Then you can play .mov files with H264 in wmp/mpc/etc.

Beware though, H.264 is slow as heck. The 1080p videos on Apple's site rape anything but a top of the line A64 or P4.

My processor is anything but top of the line and the videos are like glass. The codec is really something on Macs. Perhaps it'll just take a while for a decent PC version to come around.

Whatever. I can re-encode the video if that avi you got doesn't work.

It works.

But thanks, though.

Yeah, there was also talk about Windows being a little behind.  It'll be all the rage in a month, I'm sure.  But still in Macland now.

Apple pwns Windows.
