Title: The First Scandal
Post by: nacho on January 21, 2009, 12:18:38 PM
City Paper posted about this with a "sarcasm" tag, so I figured it was all a joke.

Turns out it isn't... There's a movement saying Obama is not the President because of the flubbed oath of office.  Links and discussion below.

Oh, Jesus Christ people are fucking retarded.  I was under the impression that the oath was merely a formality... since they were running about 5 minutes late yesterday, I heard Peter Jennings (or whoever it was) say, "Barack Obama actually became the 44th President 4 minutes ago at noon," even though they hadn't administered the oath of office yet.

Hey, Fox News is fighting for us, man.  They're protecting the American people!

Yes, it's time based, by law. Because what if the nation was under a direct military siege? You wouldn't want the President to wander around looking for a bible and someone to administer the oath.

Roberts fucked it up, plain and simple. Obama's just being gracious.

Wow.  Actually, I'm glad you guys looked that up (the time thing) and confirmed that it was Roberts who flubbed it.  I'd actually thought Obama messed up first, but I wasn't paying close attention and had heard otherwise.

Oh, Roberts fucked it up wholesale. Obama was totally cool about it. It's amazing how in control of the situation he was. I mean, he's always on!

and, actually, he flubbed minutes later in the first sentence of his speech, i read today.  44 people had not, in fact, been sworn in as president at the moment obama declared it so.  welcome to the new News Vulture Era.  kind of like 1992-1999, except now with more graphics and exponentially more soundbites to distort and rant about.

yesterday i was in a horrible mood.  there is a certain contingent of old-ass people working in the store whose parents grew up when it was perfectly acceptable to call any black person "nigger" to their face, even in a congenial way.  so now they're going absolutely ape-shit.  the ring-leader is a woman i've mentioned before who has her head so far up her ass it's just ridiculous.  some key quotes from yesterday that rained on my parade:

"did you know the government is spending over $150 million on this ceremony and all that bullshit?  i mean, we're in a recession!"

me: that's all private fundraising, except for the security.

"well, did you know he's only half-black? i mean, they don't talk about that!  he ain't the first black president.  he's only half."

me: yes, i know.

"they never talk about his white mother.  did you know that?  he had a white mom! she must have been a whore."

me: !!!!!!!  Obama only had that as his biographic lead for about six years. jesus.

"i'm going to start praying for this country tonight.  lord help us.  i've seen cars full of black people circling blocks where they don't belong.  i'm telling you, something is up.  they all think that they can do anything now.  they're going to start a new civil war."

me: *head explodes*

There's a thread at SA about the same stuff -- this retarded shit that people are saying.  This country is going to eat itself over the next four years with all this racist fuckery.

Weirdly, the racist factions of my family went pro-Obama as soon as Palin came on board.  If there's one thing worse than niggers it's women! Yee-haw!

I'm going to drink some wine and cry about my upbringing now.

i told my girlfriend that in 60 years we'll be shaking our heads and spouting bullshit about the first homosexual/trans-species candidate for president.  the cycle of humanity has to march on, right?  at some point it's inevitable that i'll become obsolete and surrounded by a world i don't understand, right?

actually, i started having nightmares in october conflating "the smiler" with obama.  they've since receded, but, man, for a while i was second guessing everything.

I love this "44 oaths" bullshit. Where was all the relentless fact-checking the past 8 year, dickholes? I mean, what the fuck? Bush gets away with "Saddamn has NUKEULAR MISSSALS and LOADS OF ANTHRAX, I swear!" but Obama gets called on a fucking technicality? Fuck the media sometimes. God.

Sometimes?  Fuck them all the time.  Our "media," when not doing this, is just standing around reading blogs to us 24 hours a day.

"And on Penis Envy dot com Triple X Warrior says that he hates tight underwear.  Meanwhile, over on..."

Hey, nubbins, that old woman's right - "give 'em an inch!"

Then again, we don't want to misunderestimate Mr. Obama because if you fool us once - shame on you, but fool us twice - you can't fool us twice!

Quote
Updated 8:47 p.m. By Anne E. Kornblut and Michael D. Shear President Obama took the oath of office -- again -- on Wednesday, out of what a White House lawyer described as "an abundance of caution." "We believe that the oath of office was administered effectively and that the president was sworn in appropriately yesterday. But the oath appears in the Constitution itself. And out of an abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice Roberts administered the oath a second time," said White House Counsel Greg Craig in a statement issued early Wednesday night. Obama and Chief Supreme Court Justice John Roberts had both seemingly stumbled over the 35-word oath during Obama's swearing-in as president on Tuesday, leading some to question whether he had properly committed the Constitutionally-mandated speech act that made him president of the United States.

Now it's actually given birth to new scandal because, apparently, they didn't notify any of the 5 major networks, so there weren't any cameras there to video tape the moment.  So.... the media is all pissy and now they're saying that the second swearing in goes against Obama's call for more transparency in the government god I hate people.

Yeah, watching that wildfire start.  This is amazing.  I'm sure it'll soon be eclipsed by the "Obama puts on his left shoe first" scandal.  We already have the "no jacket in the Oval Office" controversy.

Fox News is being the worst with all this.  They were the torch carrier for the whole "it's not official" thing.

I guess that's to be expected.

The media's been retarded the past 8 years. Why should we expect anything different now?

I actually got control of the television long enough last night to switch to MSNBC so I could watch Hardball because Chris Matthews owns.  But, they cut into it with breaking news about Caroline Kennedy pulling out... no wait she's in... no she's out... it's because of perso... Teddy is... no wait, we think she's gotten word....  no wait she's in.... out again... they think it's because she's not ready to... she's in out in out...

Then I screamed, threw the remote through the television and set the house on fire.

Back to my list of reasons why I don't own a TV.

After my awesome CNN.com experience on Inauguration Day, I'll probably never get cable again. It's unnecessary, especially if you're willing to wait a few hours to watch the new episodes of any regular shows you watch.

Live sports and events like te Oscars are where "interent TV" still gets sticky.

And also, increasingly, available for download.  I see all Awards shows, and most of the major games show up on my secret site.

At the top of that list, you need to put commercials.  Commercials are the most evil, insipid and mentally polluting things man has ever created.
Title: Re: The First Scandal

Yeah.  Last commercial I saw was at RC's house on December 20th.  Before that, it had been a couple years.  I can't believe how omnipresent they are.

case in point... THIS FUCKING COMMERCIAL was on CNN during a Lou Dobbs break last night.  My jaw nearly hit the floor.  I just can't believe they're allowed to get away with crap like this.

If you told me that was a joke commercial from a Zucker Brothers movie, I'd believe you.

I wish I could, man.  But... it's 100% serious.  Believe it or not, those currency commercials are better than they used to be.  The government started requiring them to tell people it was Liberian currency... before, you didn't have a clue.  They were selling them like they'd been made at a US mint.

The worst was the commemorative 9/11 half-dollar.... the WTC was gold leafed and, get this, you could actually tilt them up and stand them up straight off the quarter like a fucking pop-up book.
Title: Re: The First Scandal
Post by: nacho on January 22, 2009, 01:40:14 PM
Yeah, that Liberian thing is what threw me.  Never heard that before.  Amazing.

My landlady offered me a TV that she took after she evicted some poor family and I told I'd just sell it.  Guess I shouldn't have said that, because then she never brought it by.

I certainly understand disdain for television... what you have to realize is that it's not the TV set's fault that television sucks.  Also, TV's can be used for a lot more than just watching television.  I should send you my old one.
