Title: iPhone 3Gee!
Post by: Tatertots on July 31, 2008, 08:32:56 PM
I won an iPhone in a design competition and I finally got my hands on it last Friday after fighting with retarded AT&T and, holy crap, it's awesome. Originally I wasn't going to get one because I typically hate hate HATE phones that do anything other than make calls. Leave it to Apple, of course, to do a cell phone properly.

Physically, it feels like a slab of solid metal--indestructible. It's a bit slippery, but I'll get a case for that and to protect it. It resists scratching like no other. It fell out of my pants onto a concrete floor at the gym while I was changing and I can't find a single nick or scratch on it. The screen is ridiculously bright and crisp. Text is very readable on it.

The regular phone functions are solid and flawless. Visual voicemail is great for skipping the endless messages from family members or skipping things I can get to later. The calendar, weather app, and other built-in apps are great. Mail is nice, too. Unfortunately, I don't think it does any spam-filtering, so a lot of what I get is spam. I think I can fix that on my e-mail account servers though -- auto-delete anything with high spam scores.

The built in map is crazy good, too. With GPS, you can find your location automatically and then get easy directions to anywhere.

Most of the websites I use a lot have fantastic mobile versions -- Google Reader's version is one standout. It works great.

The real benefit, though, is the apps you can buy or get for free from the app store. Holy crap! Here's what I've got so far:

Box Office: I can see what movies are playing and where and what Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic thinks of them. It took me maybe 15 seconds to schedule a Dark Knight viewing with my friend. It was so easy. You can also buy tix from Fandango right there. One cool feature, too, is that it can use GPS to automatically find theaters close to you. So if I visit a city and want to catch a show, it'd take ten seconds to find.

Yelp!: It's like the website, but with frickin' GPS and laser beams. Anyplace I go, I can find local stuff and see reviews for those places easily.

New York Times: I could just visit the website, but their app makes it a lot easier to read and navigate. Very slick. If I had a commute, I'd read the news this way.

Enigmo: The first game I bought -- tons of fun. The controls can be a bit difficult, but I got used to it rather quickly. More info: http://www.pangeasoft.net/enigmo/

Labyrinth LE: Remember that marble maze thing where you tilted the surface to navigate a maze with a marble? This is the same but with different levels and such. The accelerometer on this iPhone is ridiculously accurate -- it really feels like I'm controlling a marble in this game. It's accurate enough, actually, that you can download apps that make your iPhone act as a level.

Pandora: Easily the coolest app I've got right now. It's like XM Radio, but everywhere. I'm listening to my Soul Coughing station right now! Oh, it's nice. Nice, indeed.

The next step for me is to get my software developer kit so I can write some programs for this thing. I may actually turn one of my ideas into my senior project.

This phone is great. If you've been thinking about getting one, stop thinking and start doing. Get one.

Oh, also, the 3G network is great when it's available. It's available in most of San Luis Obispo, but when I can't get it, it uses the Edge network, which is fairly slow. On 3G, I can watch YouTube videos as though I was at home. Fun!

My office-mate/landlady just gave up her iPhone because the forced AT&T service sucks in DC.  If you're in DC or greater met, then you want Verizon.  Or else you can have your nice, crippled iPhone that doesn't work 80% of the time.

But DC is currently caught up to 1970.  So, perhaps, by the 2050's, it'll be okay to use a 2008 standard iPhone.

I figure in two years, AT&T should have better 3G coverage. And that's when I'll get the iPhone generation 3 - cheaper than both the first two.

I'm thinking of getting the new 3G iPhone.

Don't they have a plastic back, Tyson?

Also, how have you been dealing with these rumoured app crashes and poor 3G sensitivity problems?

Nope -- metal back. Feels like a solid slab of steel in your hand. It's very nice.

Uh... What app crashes and 3G problems?

The New York Times app is the only app that crashes on me but that's because it was written by a four year old. 3G works great for me, so whatever.

Don't they have a plastic back, Tyson? Because those make me hard like Michael Phelps abs.

Also, how have you been dealing with these rumoured app crashes and poor 3G sensitivity problems? Because I'm so gay, my ass needs to be really sensitive.

Uh... What app crashes and 3G problems?

I read a couple of CNET articles about how 3rd party apps were frequently crashing upon start-up and also how a reportedly lower than usual 3G sensitivity meant that keeping network connections was touch and go.

I fucking love it.

Haven't had any problems with it, although some of my friends have had with theirs, although theirs were White 16gb and Black 8gb so different models, nor did they take much effort updating the software regularly.

The only thing that's popped up is that the headphones' microphone/iPod controller button rectangle thing has appeared to stop working, although the headphones still play the sound. I don't know if this is the hardware fault of the headphones or if some little software-driver has been lost.

Does anyone know if the iPhone can act as a air card?  For example can I hook it into a laptop and use it to connect to the internet.  Some Palm phones do that.

But it's expressly forbidden in your Carrier contract.
Title: Re: iPhone 3Gee!
Post by: Tatertots on April 08, 2009, 04:48:47 PM
The 3.0 version of the OS, coming in June, allows tethering, but it's up to the carriers to allow it. I'd imagine that they'll want a ton of money to allow tethering. But you never know. Actually, the 3.0 OS has a ton of really cool new things in it.

Also, the other day, I was walking to work and bought a song and listened to it in the space of, like, 60 seconds. If you told me 10 years ago that I'd be buying and listening to music on my phone while walking to class, I'd have rolled my eyes. The iPhone continues to wow me.
Title: Re: iPhone 3Gee!
Post by: Nubbins on April 08, 2009, 05:29:57 PM
Yeah, Verizon is fucking retarded about tethering.  David had a phone about 3 years ago that we used when we were on the road to get internet.  You just tethered it to the computer and bingo... well, now he's switched to a Blackberry that also has the ability to be thethered... only Verizon makes you pay like $15 a month for them to UNLOCK the ability to tether.

So, fun apps:

Wolfenstein 3D: http://www.iphoneappratings.org/wolfenstein-3d-classic

It's the original, ported to the iPhone and, my god, it's almost too much nostalgia to handle. It doesn't have the original music, unfortunately, but the graphics and gameplay are all there. It's amazing.

Twitterific: http://iconfactory.com/software/twitterrific

The new 2.0 version is the best Twitter client EVAR.

Things: http://culturedcode.com/things/iphone/

Kick-ass to do list. Keeps me in line, most of the time.

USA Today: http://www.usatoday.com/iphone/

It's the only newsreader app that doesn't blow chunks. New York Times used to have a fantastic app, but somehow they've made it slower and crashier with each new version. USA Today's app is rock-solid and fast as hell.

Apple to ship new iPhone in September: sources

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Apple's next-generation iPhone will have a faster processor and will begin shipping in September, three people with direct knowledge of the company's supply chain said.

The production of the new iPhone will start in July/August and the smartphone will look largely similar to the iPhone 4, one of the people said on Wednesday.

The iPhone -- introduced in 2007 with the touchscreen, on-demand application template now adopted by its rivals -- remains the gold standard in the booming smartphone market.

Reports on the timeline of the new iPhone launch vary, though it is largely expected that Apple will likely refresh its iPhone 4 later this year.

The sources declined to be identified because the plans for the new iPhone were not yet public. An Apple spokeswoman in Hong Kong was not available for comment.

The iPhone is one of Apple's most successful products, with more than 16 million sold in the last quarter of 2010 and the product accounted for more than a third of the company's sales in the quarter.

The current iPhone 4 was launched by Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs in June last year and began shipping the same month in 2010.

Apple sources many of its components from Taiwan-based suppliers, many of whom are expected to benefit from an uptick in sales as some of them rely on the U.S. company for about 20-40 percent of their business, said Vincent Chen, an analyst at Yuanta Securities.

"For some suppliers, Apple is their cash cow, or their bread and butter," Chen said.

"With all these versions being launched so frequently, it will be the so-called low-margin suppliers, such as those that assemble the phones, who will benefit the most."

Suppliers to the new iPhone include camera module maker Largan Precision Co Ltd, touchscreen panel maker Wintek Corp and case maker Foxconn Technology Co Ltd, two of the people said.

The companies would begin production either in July or August before shipping components to Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, flagship of Foxconn Technology Group, for assembly, they said.

Officials at Largan, Wintek and Foxconn declined to comment.

On Wednesday, Largan's Taipei-listed shares ended up 3.7 percent, Hon Hai rose 4.3 percent and Foxconn rose 6.6 percent, outpacing the benchmark TAIEX share index's 2 percent advance.

Apple, a big purchaser of touchscreen displays and flash memory, is also dependent on Japan for some of its key components, sparking concern that the disruption due to the crisis there may hurt its gross margins.

Apple is expected to report another spectacular quarter on Wednesday, tempered by growing caution over how supply constraints will squeeze margins and restrain iPhone and iPad sales.

Welcome to the land of smartphones! It's like when we were first buying computers. Remember that? Of course, I keep reading about how switching to the iphone is difficult for heavy Google users. I'm keeping tabs on eight Gmail accounts, and heavily use Google chat... I also use the free navigation tool all the time via Google Maps because I live in a city that doesn't make sense.

So I read about how it's a pain to sync multiple gmail accounts and receive notifications (ditto gchat) and how navigation on the iphone is sub-par unless you shell out for an app...

True or false?
Title: Re: iPhone 3Gee!

I only have one gmail account and it works fine through the iPhone's Mail application, so I can't help you there.

Post by: Sirharles on January 20, 2012, 11:48:39 AM
I have both my gmail account and work account linked to the iPhone and don't have a problem.  You are right about the navigation, although I don't have the 4s so I don't know if it's different.  It doesn't have a gchat app...again at least the regular iPhone 4 doesn't.  But I've found those things not such a big deal for me.  I guess it's up to you as to how much you use the gchat and navigation.

It's the multiple gmail account problem, really. And I use navigation all the time because I can only give directions if I'm underground.

Post by: Tatertots on January 20, 2012, 02:08:54 PM
I use a few Gmail accounts on my phone -- works great. Dunno about Gchat, though. As for navigation, yeah, the iPhone is good but not great for that. Apple's been working on their own system (evidenced by them buying nav and map companies left and right), but who knows when it will come out. So for now you'd likely need one of the nab apps from the App Store. (I've never had a need for one, though, so I don't know which one is the best one.)

Your best bet is to go to an Apple Store, kick some kid in the crotch, and play with one for a bit.

I do have a friend who works in an Apple Store...maybe I'll see if he can hook me up with something.

I just got the Galaxy S II...it's dreamy.

Every time I see someone with an iPhone I think, "Wow that's really small. How does anyone operate with that little screen real estate?"

Ah ha! I was actually toying with the Galaxy at the Verizon store today...

Haha! Perspectives, man. Every time I see somebody with one of those huge HTC or Samsung Android phones I think "man, how can they carry that around in their pocket all day?"

I like big phones. Always found the weight comforting... Otherwise I'm paranoid that I've lost it.

My brother has a Droid RAZR Incredible Extreme Lupus Megatron Bloop II or something. That thing is... ridiculous. He can't carry it in is pocket because it's so large, so he ends up just leaving it at home all the time.

The Razor is half as big as my Droid One that I carry around without problem!

I have no problem with the Galaxy S II fitting in my pocket. But I don't wear skinny jeans, so that might be the difference.

Well... Nearly made the Apple jump this weekend... But the Droid 4 was free with all the various deals being thrown at me. And my bill is ten bucks less, thanks to those same deals. Memorial Day: It's what's for breakfast.

I'm a Luddite who needs a slide-out keyboard and thinks Wordfeud is dazzlingly high-tech, so it's not really like I would appreciate an iPhone anyway.

I miss a keyboard actually.

And knowing what I know now, I may switch mack to a Blackberry/keyboarded thing next time out. Email is still my lifeblood and it's hard to write long ones on the iPhone.

Oh-ho! How the mighty iPhone falls.

That also influenced my decision... I've been really happy with my Droid. I got it for the same purpose: Get to my email whenever it's blocked here at work, or I'm on the road. Everything else is gravy. The slideout keyboard is lovely, it's been durable through my usual levels of extreme gadget abuse, and all the basic level stuff has come in handy. No complaints with Droid 1, so why jump ship?

Also, Motorola uses fewer slaves so I know that only three children died to make my Droid versus the five children who were ground to a pulp making an iPhone.

I'm actually disgusted by the whole thing. More and more people I know have "downgraded" to a normal old cell phone. They get them for free these days, the bill is a third of what I pay. Text and voice only. Back to basics. And they're all very happy with the decision.

I use the publishing to justify it (and it has repeatedly been necessary), but, man, if I ever downgrade my life...the fucking smartphone is the first to go.

If I think about how much important email I really miss, I realize I don't need anything but a cheap phone.

I'd say that about my shit...but publishing is like running a monkey house, and I'm managing two separate companies. I get fucking RED ALERT emails three times a day every day. Sometimes I get so many I just give up and put the phone away. Like whatever the fuck shit is going on today with the goddamned epub conversion. I don't know. I give up. The phone's in my backpack and I'm just going to watch Double Rainbow remixes on Youtube.

Hi iPhone people! This comes on the heels of a news story denying that these workers are there under guard, and forced to work (bold is mine).

Foxconn plant in China closes after workers’ brawl

By Hayley Tsukayama, Monday, September 24, 9:09 AM

Foxconn, which applies and assembles electronics for several top electronics companies, has closed down one of its plants after a fight broke out in a company dormitory in the northern Chinese city of Taiyuan.

According to the Associated Press, it’s not clear what started the fight, but as many as 2,000 workers may have been involved. About 40 people were taken to the hospital, according to reports from the AP and state-run Chinese news sources.

Xinhua News Agency reported that the fight broke out when workers from the Shandong province fought with those from the Henan province.

The state-run news service said that as many as 5,000 police were dispatched to the fight, and had it under control by 9 a.m. The plant will be closed Monday and could reopen as early as Tuesday, the AP reported.

But there are also reports that workers were fighting with factory guards. Reuters reported that people posted messages on a Chinese micro-blogging site alleging that factory guards had beaten one or more workers, but that the reports could not be independently confirmed.

Foxconn did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It’s not yet known which products made by Foxconn are manufactured at the Taiyuan plant. Foxconn makes Apple iPad and iPhones, as well as products for companies such as Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard.

The company’s troubled labor history is well-known, and has come to light more and more as Apple’s iPhones and iPads have gained popularity.

There was a string of worker suicides at the company’s plant in Shenzhen in 2010, prompting the company to install anti-suicide nets around its building. The incidents brought the company into the spotlight of public scrutiny and Apple asked for an independent suicide prevention review. In May 2011, an explosion at the company’s plant in Chengdu killed three people and injured 16.

In January 2012, Apple released its own audit of worker conditions across its entire supply chain, including Foxconn plants, finding labor and environmental violations. Apple also joined the Fair Labor Association, which ran its own independent audits of three Foxconn facilities. The FLA found that over one-half of the employees at Foxconn’s assembly plants exceeded the company’s 60 hour-per-week work limit.

Foxconn most recently faced criticism when reports surfaced that it was forcing vocational workers to make iPhones to meet demands for Apple’s newest smartphone. Foxconn denied those claims, saying that workers at the plant through school programs were allowed to leave at any time.
