This month I read The Twelve, the second book in The Passage trilogy. Justin Cronin needs to learn how to end his books better.

Now moving on to Vicious...which is awesome so far!

Moving on to the much anticipated Ann Leckie fantasy:

The Raven Tower

Oh, good. Found something I like!

A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe

Janky at first because it's this insane mashup of high fantasy, spell-caster bullshit in a gritty BSG sci-fi universe. So, like, it took me 40 pages to adapt to this and...now we're having nothing but candy cane fun!

So, yes. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was dreadful reading as an adult. So sad.

Moving on to the so far very amazing The Vorrh. Capably written modern fantasy.

The Vorrh got really bad really fast... Very unhappy with the book. The author threw everything, and the kitchen sink, into it. Far too taken with being novel.

Next up is another one I';m quitting. The Bastard Legion. By Chapter two, the author is obviously obsessed with Spielberg turning the book into a movie. Too precious by far.

Man... Really having trouble getting back into the reading saddle. I feel like the horrible quality of LotR from an adult's POV has ruined reading for me!

So I decided to re-read the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Something I did when I was 12, back when I missed all the details. Now I'm just, like, blah. Fellowship is this weird blend of a children's book and a "I don't know what I want to do" book, with long-winded ecposition scenes largely devoted to ret-conning The Hobbit (which, of course, Tolkien literally did shortly before Fellowship hit the shelves).

Anyway, almost through Fellowship. Reading the copies that have been in my family library since 1961! They smell nice. I'll take a candy break in between Fellowship and Two Towers.

Moving on to The Two Towers!

Jesus, this trilogy is agonizingly bad for adult reading.

Delving into Return of the King. Which is a hot mess for the first hundred pages.

I'm reading textbooks all the time... which in some ways is more book reading than I've done in years.

Next time we're drunk together, let's talk about Jaws the novel as a poor Harold Robbins knock-off that happens to have a shark in it.

And, even then, barely.

There's a bit of that First Blood in it, too. Where all the "heroes" from the movie are actually despicable. I loved that Rambo was the bad guy in First Blood the book and the sheriff was the good guy the audience was meant to identify with.
