The people I know of that age group (bartenders, service types, people's kids) aren't on social media at all.  In fact, I don't know a single kid of that age group who has stayed online. Most of them quit during the pandemic.

As a guy who spends an inordinate amount of time with 18-22-year-olds, I can say with confidence that what's happening in the virtual space is as relevant to their loves, if not more so than what happens in the land of the old flesh. They're not gaming the algorithm, they're living out their lives, their real lives in those spaces.

As you say, the corporate overlords use that to their advantage. Most rich people I know don't use social media. Hell, most people I know make over $100K a year don't use it. But everybody else uses it all the time. I mean constantly. I don't have the data on hand to prove it, but I'll bet the less education and higher poverty level someone has, the more time they spent on social media. (There was agreat article recently about how boomers are the most social media addicted age group.)

Back to Elon, he wants to control the discourse. He wants to matter in the realm of "big ideas" and "power." He thinks he knows better. It's why beta dude-bros love him and normal people can't stand him. He doesn't want power (in the same way I don't think Trump actually wanted power). He just wants to matter. He wants to be the oracle people come to for wisdom. At the time he set out to buy Twitter, it was the social media platform du jour. Now it's Betamax.

Fuck Elon Musk. In the ass.

I still haven't watched Andor. It's my X-Mas break watch.

Concludes today. We love the fuck out of it!

Less lovely is The English, which is a slow-paced fish out of water revenge story that's very aware of our treatment of the Indians. It somehow embraces and avoids all the usual cliches at the same time. Very interesting storytelling, but... Not much happens. Definitely a "Neo-Western" with great performances by Emily Blunt, Hollywood's current go-to Indian actor Chaske Spencer, and Stephen Rea whose only job is to chew on the scenery. The good news is that it fucking ends so we don't have to wait two years to see what happens. A nice open and closed story, period, goodbye, would you like a free Echo Dot?

There's no way they stuck the landing on the finale. I have no idea because the seven people still watching TWD haven't spoken up yet.

Oh, actually, the last half of the final season was what the last 11 seasons should have been. The finale was largely devoted to giving everyone who isn't getting a spin-off a "happily ever after" while everyone who is getting a spin-off got to narrate their new origin stories and set up the drama. Those three new spin-offs will premiere...um...in a few months.

So... The Walking Dead isn't over by a long shot! The "finale" was a transition episode for half the cast to get their own TWD Universe shows.

Twitter?

Why is everyone saying this? Like the executives before Musk were angels or something. All social media is evil, everyone who runs it is evil. We're willingly giving all of our information to private corporations who exist solely by selling that information to anyone with the money to buy it, even if that includes rogue nations and serial killers.

But then one asshole buys out the other assholes and we're all clutching our pearls. What's next? A kickstarter campaign for the evil monsters who all just walked away with a 49 billion dollar severance?

Mostly because he shitcanned everyone or bullied them into leaving, now the whole apparatus appears to be a runaway train barreling toward disaster. But who knows what?s true anymore?

I do think people are giddy to see Elon fail.

I agree with Nubbins just a bit here. I think the general consensus is that Elon is going to finish the job Trump started and make Twitter about as relevant as MySpace. Even before the sale, TikTok had emerged as the new social media top banana. From an end user experience, it's been horrible for a long time. I stoped using it because I universally felt awful after even just ten minutes on it.

And, Musk is just a fucking tool, so yeah the groundlings are clamoring for someone to Charles I his ass.

The great mistake everyone has made is that they think social media is a game and they read the feeds. Social media is a tool for corporations (like me!) to sell you shit. The only game being played is twisting the algorithm in favor of the sale. I never look at my feeds. I never know what's happening, what's trending, or why. Because that's not what the tool is for. Even when I'm fucking around as Nacho I'm trying to sell everybody something.

When you approach it like that, it's confounding that people are hanging themselves because they got called a cow by what's probably an auto-responder Russian robot.
