So... Czech beer that's not from the tap in the Czech Republic is just the corpse of a beer in a glass coffin.
Those of us who have been to the Czech republic to prove just that theory -- discuss!
It's true. Urquell is passable because it's the big import (though it's 100 times better over there), but the other Czech beers, all of which are amazing there, are really crap here. I found a weird out of the way deli that specializes in eastern european beer imports and, man, what a let down.

Have you been to the Brewer's Art yet? It's about 40 minutes away, in Baltimore, and was fantastic last I checked.

Hi Americans trying to recreate Belgian beer...which is not all that anyway.
I'm due to meet Pagan Kennedy in Bmore on the 12th. Might make that the meeting place...
-
I was there in 2001. Very hip. Bar in basement, lounge upstairs, I suppose there's a dining room somewhere upstairs.
-
Dining?
-
yeah. I never saw it but I'm pretty sure it's there.
-
Do they also have...restrooms?
-
Dude it's a big happening bar. the fact that they have seating and food that I've heard is good was a surprise to me at the time. I can understand how it'd be unsurprising to you, not having gotten wasted in the basement.
I don't remember the restrooms.
-
They have seating!
-
Hope you didn't spend all your booze budget in the CR on Pivo per se...most tourists make it a point to indulge in a fiery Absinthe session or two while in the former CzechoSlovakia.
-
I confess to being a tourist, then. My favorite was the absinthe cannabis.
-
Did you also binge on the dark Czech beer that makes Guinness taste like tap water? Actually the best dark beer in the world comes from Slovakia.
-
I did have some of that! Truly lovely. I have not had any beer out of Slovenia, though... I'll have to put that on the ever-growing list.
-
I AM DRINKING MILLER LITE YEAH
-
Darn you ignorant American! Slovenia and Slovakia are halfway across the continent from each other.....another prowd produkt of the Maryland Public Schools I see!
-
Oh, look at what I did. I have had beer out of Slovenia, actually, I tooled around Ljubljana and environs for a week. But not Slovakia. Never been.
And, you know, if it isn't America, it's all the same: Heathen.

Bump!
I can't stop drinking Pilsner Urquell and I've always hated it out of the bottle in the States. Discuss.

Amazing the difference between being 80 miles from the brewery and 5000 miles, eh?

I'm going to seriously blog about beer later down the line once I've started taking some notes, but I've found my mecca. Prague is a beer drinker's paradise.
-
Now I want a beer...I was going to try for a dry week.

Just went exploring online... Found a new blog subscription:

Shit, I've had one, ONE dry day since I got here.

I'm on day two. It's hard. My solution is just to cancel all social engagements and play Empire: Total War all night.

I'm just not going to worry about it and check into rehab when I get stateside which, you know, may be never.
-
Do you use the Gentle Alarm app on your phone? It's ad-supported. For the last five days, I've woken up and turned it off and gotten an ad for a rehab clinic in DC.
-
Staropramen is the other Czech brand that's pretty ubiquitous in town. Not bad either.

I've been hanging on the light beers more than darks in Prague. The darker beers are sweeter which isn't really my taste.
-
I am very much looking forward to a beer blog. And some life in this sub-forum! You'd think, on a board of raging alcoholics, we'd talk more about it...
-
One of my cohort has been keeping notes on beers which inspired me to do the same. In a month that blog should write itself.
-
I'm anxious for the next regular installment. Are we at the "I'm Afraid of Americans" music video moment yet?
-
You'll have to wait and see!
-
Beer in Prague costs like 80c the pint. Staropramen is lovely.
ALSO - HAPPY BIRTHDAY RC YOU BIG HOMO!

Your face is a pub crawl.

Staropramen is lovely.
Sipping it at home right now.
Though there's a distinct difference between the bottled pilasters and the tapped ones. I've become enamored with "tank pivot," beer shipped in large tanks where they go through the final brewing process. Pretty good.
Now I may sneak out and have one...
