nacho and tyson are fellow urban explorers like me. So, between the three of us, we should be able to come up with some entertaining stories, right?
I'll start.
Kent Ohio, before it became a college town, was a stopover for trains criscrossing the midwest. There are tons of train tracks all around, and many of them are abandoned. The bold tradition of "walking the tracks" was handed down to me and my roommate, the Great Ernesto, by some other guys in our first dorm.
Oh, the terror! For 18 year old freshmen who are still trying to get ahold of the whole "being on your own and responsible for your own safety and well-being" thing, this experience was terrifying...walking across the darkned town well after midnight, sneakthiefing through the quiet blocks of homes away from campus and jumping the guardrail of a bridge that traveled over one pair of tracks. We walked, being led by the older students, aiming nowhere, stumbling over the ties.
Imagine pitch black. Ohio seems to manage this above all other states. There are sounds in the woods on either side of you, skittering gravel, growling rodents, shrieking owls and...what's that rustling in the bushes!?
But it's worth all the fear when, far off in the distance you can see the beaming headlight of a freight train and start to hear the rumble. You slide down the gravel slope into the woods, cowering there in the darkness, because engineers have been known to stop fifty-car trains and shoot rifles into the dark if they see trespassers, but when the engine has shot past, you know you're safe, so you come out of hiding, stagger up to the track again and hold your arms out as this metal behemoth flies past you at forty-five miles per hour, chang-chang, ching-chang. The wind is incredible and the smell of pure racing metal is enticing.
We went out at least once a month, including one stint where we went three times a week, guaging the different phases of the moon. There are abandoned tracks that are falling apart and lead to rundown old water tanks, underpasses filled with graffitti, evidence of campfires and winos' beds. And the tunnels...always a threat to be caught in one when a train comes. One time Ernesto and I had no choice...we stood leaning flat against the concrete wall, pressing ourselves as thin as we could, and the train flew by six inches from our faces, and all we could think about was some stray bulkhead or loose door swinging wide and decapitating us. But after it was over....well, our souls were never the same.
I'll take anybody that wants to go sometime. I've got the whole map in my head. It's one of the only true ways to face your fear of the dark.
woo!

Put me on the list to go. Less train dancing and more to the tumbledown shit. All of that has been wiped out here in DC. The old train spurs that used to serve the warehouses between Silver Spring and the city are fading away. A few cool spots, but all privately owned areas now. Warehouses still in action and well protected.
But a couple of the areas that could be reached have been torn up, broken down, built over, cleaned up. The long arm of total gentrification. Nothing dead should be visible from any of your windows.
A trip to Ohio should involve my usual visit to "the end of US 40." Neat little spot outside St. Clairesville where 40 crumbles into a man-made swamp, backed up against the wall of I-70. The old phone poles rotting away. 40 picks up later on, of course, but the Ohio stretch is some classic old road. And between Hagerstown and the PA border, where you have to work really hard to stay with 40, criss-crossing I-68 and running into mysterious number changes and residential turnoffs. Might be worth a trip from DC to Team Jackson using the best parts of US 40, eh?
Now I have the urge to repost, from the old GS, my lengthy visit to the Forest Glen Seminary (www.operant.com/seminary/main_page.html). Might get around to that in a bit.
Also, if we can manage a lengthy Ohio trip sometime, I'd like to write to the Forgotten Ohio folks and organize a joint tour of Crate City:
http://www.forgottenoh.com/Crate/crate.html
We should attempt (and it's so very hard, isn't it) to plan out a week for an Ohio adventure. My time off is shot in July, thanks to the summer vacation. But I return to good graces in September. Maybe something around Labor Day? Or maybe certain point covered around the weekend of the 4th?
-
Oh, fuck.
UPDATE: I've received several reliable reports that Crate City, which stood behind Starck's storage locker area on Groveport Road in SE Columbus, has been bulldozed and no longer exists in an explorable form. I'll check up on this personally, but as of right now (September 2004) I can't confirm that it's still there. With all the housing developments popping up in the area, it doesn't surprise me that such a dangerous place would be gotten rid of. But it still sucks.
It's everywhere man!
-
ha ha...september. you slay me.
the days of road trips to ohio are coming to an end for me, my friend. you know this. this july is the last hurrah. start in akron, the home base, day trips to kent bars, night walks on the tracks, record an album, try to break into the EJ Thomas building...Cleveland for the art museum, then a quick trip to Athens to see the unmarked graves and Cuckoo's Nest sanitorium. also going to wellsburg for a weekend, the 9th i believe. maybe i should drop in on action jackson and rascal ruschell. then ann arbor and back down, perhaps stopping off in DC if you're back yet, then back to asheville and the folks.
Gather my stuff and move on down to the Big Easy. simple, right?
-
Oh, right, you have something due in September, don't you! And speak of the devil, too. I just got done with a 20 minute call to the l-a-w-y-e-r. He says: "G'day! Liquid lunch Friday?"
I'll be around in July. We'll hook up, talk shop, and visit some DC sites. And drink...drink...drink...drink...
And I'm going to visit the fuck out of you in NOLA. You know that, right?

come on down!

I tried to get some San Luis Obispo U.E. goin' on my freshman year, but Computer Science squashed those dreams pretty fast. I got a few good chuckles in, anyways:
http://fallingbullets.com/portfolio/design/websites/cue/
That's the old site.
The train tracks that come through SLO take a winding, sloping path northward that rises vertically probably a few hundred yards over two miles of tracks. My old chiropactor told me that you can hike up there and sneak through the tunnels that dot the tracks, but only a few of them would give you enough room on the side to ensure survivng a run through. Some have cut-outs every fifty yards or so, so when you hear a train, you have to dash to the closest one to avoid becoming one with the cement.
Other than that, I haven't had time to get words on the good places to explore. This summer, I can pose as a student studying building decay or something and hit up our libraries for information on abandoned hospitals and industrial plants.
Just me, a camera, and a bike this summer.

If she's into UE, hit RI Ave before all those warehouses are sold off.
-
which part? College Park area?
-
No, at Rhode Island Ave.
All the good stuff is gone, thanks to gentrification. Even those warehouses are tough to break into. And CSX/the District just sold that huge stretch of nothingness so the bridge rooms and general decay along there will be gone soon.
If you're into UE and so hot for a road trip, why not go up to Centralia? It's just about a three hour drive, using interstates, four on backroads.

Not necessarily urban exploration... Just an interesting story on an abandoned place. The government built city of Ordos in China, constructed for a million people it stands empty:

Back when the Forest Glen Seminary was a huge, spooky place, I always had this dream of buying it.
Now it's a bunch of horrific condos surrounding little islands of historic buildings that are being sold off piece by piece. And are surprisingly affordable. Because...they're condemned.
Here's the latest (the old gym):

Ten abandoned cities:
http://www.gadling.com/2011/04/27/the-worlds-ten-creepiest-abandoned-cities
Gadling does a poor job explaining some of these, so I'll fill in the gaps!
Pripyat, of course, is well known. But Sanzhi was new to me. Gadling says:
This area called Sanzhi was originally a vacation resort catering to U.S. servicemen north of Taipei. The architecture could be called UFO futuro chic, and the abandoned resort community had difficulties from the beginning. During construction, many workers perished in car accidents, and other freak accidents were common. The urban legend online search trail places the death count close to twenty. The deaths were attributed to supernatural causes. Some speculated that the resort was built on a Dutch burial ground while others attributed the misfortunes to a dragon statue destroyed during construction. Either way, the ruins never took their first guest, and the stillborn project was abandoned.
More at Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanzhi_UFO_houses
There's videos and photo links at that article. My impression is that this is less a "city" and more a group of vacation homes circling a small lake.
Craco sounds awesome!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craco
Kolmanskop:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolmanskop
Hashima Island:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashima_Island
Site of Battle Royale II. It's where the first picture on the Gadling article comes from:
(https://greatsociety.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2F3%2F36%2FStairway_to_Hell.jpg%2F800px-Stairway_to_Hell.jpg&hash=ced7d8d190b28585e25a3eebe4169e5606cad2fb)
Oradour-sur-Glane is more memorial than anything else, and isn't an intentionally abandoned city like the others. So a little unfair sticking it on the list since a visit there is roughly on par with a visit to Auschwitz and so on.
Centralia is well known, as well. And, as they admit, not technically abandoned. Remarkably.
Humberstone -- another bad addition to this list. One of many abandoned mining towns around the world (the town beneath the bridge at New River Gorge should get mentioned if they're going to throw in glorified mining camps). Though Humberstone has a good story to tell since Pinochet converted it into a concentration camp.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humberstone_and_Santa_Laura_Saltpeter_Works
The same goes for Bodie. Western ghost towns. Yawn.
Kyakol, though, looks pretty fun.

The two that caught my eye (which I'd not known about) were Thurmond, WV and the Seattle-beneath-Seattle.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Underground
Seems like it's become more touristy than UE-worthy...
Thurmond, as well, is not quite abandoned. The article says 7 residents...but it has a tourist info center and an active Amtrak stop...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thurmond,_West_Virginia
So...I guess, blah. Not a good update for the UE thread. But, still, any excuse to celebrate urban (and rural) decay.

Been reading about the GNAL -- the Georgia Nuclear Aircraft Laboratory which, sometime soon (if not already) will be at the bottom of a manmade lake.
Shamelessly ripped from SA:
From 1958 to 1971, the area inside that fence was a test site known as the Georgia Nuclear Aircraft Laboratory. On the original plans, it's identified as a "Lethal Fence," meaning deadly force was authorized if anyone crossed it. In the middle of that fenced off area was a 10 megawatt nuclear reactor with no shielding that was used to irradiate military equipment to test the feasibility of building nuclear-powered aircraft, and later to irradiate building materials and surrounding wildlife to determine what to expect and how to rebuild after a nuclear war.
The reactor was held in a pit where you now see a big patch of green grass. It was surrounded by a railroad loop, and rail cars of material were parked at various distances from the pit. Warning sirens would alert personnel to retreat to the large underground complex and the reactor would be hoisted out of the pit and run suspended in the air, usually for minutes or hours, but on several occasions extended runs lasting days were carried out.
Other remaining parts of the site are hot cell building where research on irradiated materials was done, and cooling-off area where rail cars of irradiated material were left to sit for a few days after being irradiated to reduce exposure of personnel to radiation. Both are fenced in and off-limits because radiation levels are elevated, although they're currently only slightly above background level.. The hot cell isn't going anywhere because its walls are 4 feet thick steel-reinforced concrete and it's a lot safer to leave it in one piece .
The underground complex is flooded and entrances are buried under huge piles of dirt, but people have dug them out and explored on many occasions.

The owners are still around, apparently, and living elsewhere on the property while in the midst of fighting some sort of heritage site status dispute with the government. It's occasionally rented out, according to some sites.

I doubt it. Looks like he took them on a cloudy day and just used lots of diffused light. Pretty good pics actually. I would have changed a few things composition wise, but I liked the photos.
I'm not sure it was staged, just because I didn't see footprints in the dust, and that would be a ton of work to cover up. Just an old building with good light and possible some Photoshop done.

I'm looking for an abandoned or decayed building for a photo shoot. In the DMV area. Preferably towards Baltimore as that's where most of the models I know live. Any suggestions. The old Henryton Hospital has been torn down I believe.
-
It has been torn down.
-
I am hard-pressed to think of places that are safe/accessible enough to do a photo shoot with dolled up models. Used to be, of course, the great Forest Glen seminary. Completely un-policed. But it, like Henryton, is gone.
St John's, maybe? (Harper's Ferry)

I have done some recon in the area. Looks to be a tricky penetration.
There are two potential roadways in. Old Portland road turns right and leads back to a juvenile detention facility (New Beginnings Youth Development Center) that serves youth from DC.
Unfortunately there is a guardhouse right at the turn (see red mark on attachment). Strongly worded agreement to search of all property.
You can also notice that the actual grounds (circled in green) can be accessed via the woodland job corps center. However, they have clearly marked No Tresspassing signs and a less imposing/unmanned guard house.
So...that leaves running through the woods from Old Portland road. Might be possible as a hike in from some distance away.

Hmmm...I'd be up for hiking.

Surprised it took this long for someone to fly a drone around Pripyat:

Ran across this at io9:
http://io9.com/peek-inside-subterranean-tunnels-deep-beneath-washingto-1679529241
A web series called Unusual Spaces goes under DC to explore the old trolley tunnels.
So that took me to their Vimeo page!

You're welcome.

Interesting stuff! I love the DC ones especially. I've actually wondered about those silos before.

Uh-oh...
http://boundarystones.org/
DC's boundary stones...which answers a mystery of a caged stone that was right near my old apartment. And, now, I want to find them all!

Oh ho! Redirect for Friday's pre-movie schedule?!?
-
We could spend 5 hours walking through people's backyards!
-
I...don't have any problem with that!
-
We can at least go look at the one in Silver Spring and then drink cucumber cocktails at the Daily Dish.

Let's set up an adventure!

Well, Reggie and I want to see the drone bridge. What other abandoned rails/roadbeds are near you? We could go on a Stand By Me hike.

I am available on up to 15 days this summer! Book it now!!

There are a few railroad beds near me, but they are still active.
You tell me on the dates, I think it's easier that way.

Are there any underground bunkers/storm shelters near DC? Looking for a video shoot.

I'd like to try and find these St. Mary's College ruins. Looks like a good spooky film location.

That's the Hell House. It's well documented on Youtube, if you want a virtual tour.
There's nothing left of it, though. I think we talked about it earlier in this thread somewhere...? It was leveled a few years ago and only the stairs remain. It's also hard to get to because the government bought most of the property.
-
It's right up the road from me! All kinds of stories about the place before that fire in 1997.

Let me introduce you to Ivan Ivanich. He is a proud fascist who would truly like to kill us all, however, approaching 90 he appeared to pose little threat. To substantiate this further, he is one of the friendliest men I have ever met. Ivan will talk your ear off, even if you don’t understand his raspy Ukrainian, as his wife stands by in silence. She listens stoically, likely having endured this prattle for decades. The Ivaniches are settlers living about 13 miles east of Reactor 4, which had an epic catastrophe here in Chernobyl in early 1986.
Lots more, and great photos, at the link.

Oooh...
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/07/07/chernobyl-vr-project-review/
Back in the days of STALKER and its two sequels, I felt like I was the only games hack who didn’t get sent on a tour of Chernobyl and Pripyat. Those who did visit came back with reports of rain and health worries and mystery meats, then shared photographs of them smiling in front of a decaying Ferris wheel or looking sombre in a Marie Celeste classroom. Perhaps it is best that I never went myself. What a strange thing to be a tourist to. Is any possible response appropriate?
The Chernobyl VR Project, essentially finished but for the time being only available for Oculus Rift, with a more refined version due for both that and Vive a little later, gives me my chance to be a tourist, without the background anxiety about background radiation.
