Yesterday was 'Day 1' of production on Cougars, NMP's new short horror comedy written and directed by yours truly. Technically I've been in pre-production in it for about six weeks, but since yesterday was our first real physical work on the short, I'm logging it as 'Day 1.'
The story? It goes something like this:
Teenage Sasha constantly battles with the promiscuous ways of her mother, Bastet. When young Stuart decides to walk Sasha home from school, he gets more than he bargained for when he discovers Sasha's and Bastet's dark secret.
I'm going to try to do video production diaries throughout the process. Here's the first one; all about "life casting" for FX make-up.
-
You need to start each one with the static. It's like I'm watching a report to Earth from the Dark Star.

Making a movie is a lot like being trapped in deep space with a bunch of crazy people.
This is going to be a good project. I got nothing but good vibes from it last night. Hoping to lock in the location today!

Teaser Trailer for COUGARS.
COUGARS tells the story of Sasha, a teenager at constant odds with the promiscuous ways of her mother, Bastet. When Sasha’s young friend Stuart decides to walk her home from school, she becomes forced to confront the dark secret that makes her more like her mother than she’d care to admit.

A good pairing, actually, on mother-daughter likeness.

And when can we expect that review?
-
"Very soon" is what he said in the mention.
-
Yeah, saw that. See, for me, when they publicly say "very soon," there's also an email telling me the basic timeline so I'm ready to blast it. Which, I suppose, is impolitic for you to leak, anyway.
-
Dread Central mentions COUGARS and says the effects recall The Howling. I'll take that any day.

Some pre-festival love from eFilmCritic:
http://www.efilmcritic.com/feature.php?feature=3383 (http://www.efilmcritic.com/feature.php?feature=3383)
'Now That You Are Dead' unfortunately suffers from the same issue that Lonnie Martin's short film, 'Cougars,' has in that its title is the very essence of a spoiler. One by name and the other by title design. Certainly not to dismiss 'Cougars' in any way as it is definitely one of the shorts you should check out (even if you have to leave '[Rec] 3' early to catch it.) It's quite fun and star Rebecca Hausman is definitely somebody that filmmakers of any genre will want in their film. It's just a shame that the twist could have been preserved as easily as taking the plural out of the title.
While Cougars has already started to make strides into becoming a full-blown feature (think "'Cat People' by way of 'An American Werewolf in London'" according to Martin), Patrick Rea has hopes that his short, Time's Up Eve, will make that leap too.

New review from Film Bizarro.
It's hard to judge "Cougars" too hard, as it does everything "as it should". It's not wild and out-there, but it's also not doing anything wrong. It's a simple, classic and fun story that I could've seen a full feature of. It's somewhere between "Sleepwalkers" and "Ginger Snaps", and that's two films I enjoy. It's a fine mix of drama, comedy and horror, and I am very open to see more from the director Lonnie Martin because he seems to understand what he is making, and that's something I find important.

Another review. This one from Dark River Press.
The film is solidly written and directed by Martin. He was able to create a fun, if not predictable creature flick with a lot of heart. I loved the old school make-up FX techniques used, especially the bladder effects which reminded me a lot of The Howling and The Beast Within.

Star Trek
Acting:
Strong, except for Ryder.
Monsters:
Make more sense than in Lost
Final thoughts:
Why isn't that redheaded crew member on IMDB? She's hot.

I think this might be the best COUGARS review yet.
http://anythinghorror.com/2012/06/01/cougars-2011/ (http://anythinghorror.com/2012/06/01/cougars-2011/)
In my review of Martin’s WOMEN’S STUDIES I really loved Martin’s message in the film but noted there were some problems on the technical, filmmaking front (I still, though, recommended the film). With COUGARS these problems have been remedied. Martin has matured nicely as a filmmaker and has worked out some of the flaws from his earlier work. COUGARS is a really well-written, well-acted, and well-executed short film that’s just plain old fun!!

Nice!
