Title: Posi+ive - 2007 48HFP
Post by: RottingCorpse on March 01, 2007, 06:33:53 PM
DC's dates are May 4 - 6. However, their security certificate has expired, so I've yet to sign up yet.

http://www.48hourfilm.com/dc/ (http://www.48hourfilm.com/dc/)

With Women's Studies pre-production, I'm a little worried about trying to do too much, but Mrs. RC is all gung-ho about having a team this year, so we're doing it.

People are trying to get me to agree that if I draw horror as a genre this year, I'll throw it back.

Yes, you should do something different.

Agreed on the horror.

And there's no need (at all) to stress about expired certs.

Signed up.

I'm pussing out this year and will film in Mrs. RC's office no matter what genre we get.

Oh and what are the dates?  Let's start planning the GS meet for the viewing now.  Or, if something goes wrong and you aren't screened, then we'll just have a drunk-up somewhere.

Screening dates aren't announced until after the competition weekend (May 4 - 6), but it's usually Tuesday through Saturday the next week after. (Probably May 14 - 19)
Title: Re: 2007 48 Hour Film Project
Post by: nacho on March 02, 2007, 04:26:54 PM
How about Saturday the 19th, then?  Maybe chance will be on our side.
Title: Re: 2007 48 Hour Film Project
Post by: RottingCorpse on March 02, 2007, 04:30:45 PM
If we make "best of" that's likely to be the screening. However, DC is the hometown contest and the competition is fierce.

And all the screenings are at the AFI which is walking distance from your and fajwat's apartment.

Post by: nacho on March 02, 2007, 04:33:46 PM
So will the 19th be too hard for Team RC?  Maybe do Saturday the 12th and call it a post-filming party and we all can have a private screening?
Title: Re: 2007 48 Hour Film Project
Post by: RottingCorpse on March 02, 2007, 04:37:32 PM
Let's pencil in the 12th, but honestly, we'll have to see how the week pans out.

Uh no. I would just hate for you to plan a successful party and then not be able to make it.

It'll be my birthday, won't it?

Not that I'll be worth much, anyway.  But I'll certainly have the energy to attend, and should be somewhat free of drugs by then.

Nacho stands up during one of the shorts in the middle.

I can see!!!  I! Can! See!  For the first time in years, people, the veil of drugs has been lifted from mine eyes!  I understand!  That short is so deep!!

Now if only my right ear would recover I could appreciate the stereo mix.

my speakers might be another 3+ weeks.

I got that.  I was sort of making fun of your obsession with music/sound and that even though you were writing from Nacho's perspective, you included something that you would care intensely about.  But a joke I have to explain...

Nacho's the one with the surround system.  He's pretty sore about it.  I'd only lose one channel; he's losing more than two.

It'll be worth it or I'll die.  OMG, don't think that.  I really don't want to go speaker shopping now.  Although I will say one thing for having borrowed my friend's speakers: they've really lowered the bar for how cheap and nasty a stereo I can put up with.  That is, I probably wouldn't have to spend $$$ right now; I could just buy a pair under $1k and they'd be better than what I've got now.  I could be done with it for a year or two and buy the fancy ones at my leisure.

Post by: nacho on April 25, 2007, 11:01:57 AM
Yeah, I'm really aware of how things sound now, because I'm mainly hearing out of my left ear.  A few weird, popping echoes in my right ear, but that's it.  And that'll be the story for a month.  Or more.

As my right ear improves, it'll start to airplane-pop constantly.  I'm continually warned to stay cool, it'll go away, but it's going to be hard to deal with.  Day and night -- pop, pop, pop -- for weeks.

That's perfect, actually.  We should look into a little party of sorts, no?  Wheel me out in the antique wheelchair.  I'll have my legs covered in a blanket and be wearing a white fedora, sunglasses, head wrapped in gauze.

"Who's that?"

"Sshhh."

It's weird that hearing is connected to balance. There has to be some wikipedia article on that.

Anyway, we'll bring the wheelchair if it means you'll come to the screening.

You have some sort of ooey gooey liquid in your ears that gives you your balance. My loss of hearing is injury-related, essentially.  They joggled everything around to get to the trigeminal nerve.  So everything needs to just settle down back there.

My balance is fine and always has been. Hmm. I wonder if that's, like, a good thing. Because the "nerve damage" thing my doctor has thrown at me whenever I ask about surgery is getting kind of annoying.

This fall will be my happy fun surgery season. Anyone else want in on the invasive head surgery bandwagon?

Title: Re: 2007 48 Hour Film Project
Post by: RottingCorpse on May 06, 2007, 02:30:28 PM
We drew "Drama" as our genre. Picture is locked, Sound and music guys are mixing, and the editor is color-correcting the footage and tweaking our "visual effects." I don't want to jinx it, but we're well on our way to making the 7:30pm deadline. We could turn it in now, as is, and have a pretty decent film, but you know, we're out to compete in this thing.

The setup for the story is that in the not so distant future, HIV makes a huge comeback and wipes out a good portion of the population. Once the outbreak subsides, the international community bans sex and marriage for HIV positive individuals, many of which are born that way. (Positives are marked with a tattoo "bracelet.") In response to lonely positives, a biotech industry selling life-like robot "Companions" has arisen.

Our short, Posi+ive, follows a positive, Ian who is cynical (yet hopeful) about his robot Companion's ability to love him back.  The story follows him as he purchases, attempts to "boot up," and possibly learn to love his Companion.

Monday might be a wash as I'll be trying to recover from the effects of sleep deprivation, though I may try to pop up Tuesday afternoon.

So you set out to make the most ambitious and complicated 48 hour film festival film possible?

And finished seven hours before the deadline.

I think that's your Tuesday production blog.
Title: Re: 2007 48 Hour Film Project
Post by: RottingCorpse on May 06, 2007, 03:01:57 PM
The set-up is crazy sci-fi, but it's a very intimate, human story. It was hard to condense into a seven minute short film. The original script draft was thirteen pages long. We trimmed it down to nine, and then nipped and tucked the film in the editing process. Pacing was a fine line as we wanted to get in as much as possible without making the whole affair feel rushed.  For the most part, I think it worked out, though I'm pretty close to it right now, so time will tell.

I feel good about it though. The filmmaker I want to be peeks out more and more with each successive project.

Yeah, this will have to be blogged about.

If you're still awake and alive.

As are we actually. Mrs. RC and I didn't get tickets in time.

Oh, and we're leaving for your place in about fifteen minutes.

So put on clothes, stop dry heaving on the bathroom floor, and try to pull myself together enough to perform in a social situation?

Something like that.

Then again, I don't mind introducing you as "Inter-Dimensional Dan."

"Best of" awards are shown Thursday the 24th.  Tickets, once they're available, will be at the same link as before ( http://www.afi.com/silver/new/nowplaying/events.aspx ).

I'll be out of town.  argh.

I forget how soon they made the announcement of the "best of" films last year, but I remember it being fairly quick.

In the meantime, we can't burn out a proper DVD because we shot the film in "progressive advanced" so we're trying to figure out a way around that.

Also, we're trying to get the Flash version of the movie on the ningenmanga.com website, but that's proving difficult too.

Damn the technology!

Based on last year's thread and time frame...should be Thursday-ish.

By the way the movie was sweet and it was nice to see everyone in person.

Although RC, meeting your wife after seeing her in her underwear was kind of surreal.

Wow...does this mean you're pretty much guaranteed best drama (since you're the only one to make it this far)?

Or do they not break it down that way?

They don't break down that way, but rather like this:

We tied for Best Screenplay with this film, which was made by a buddy of mine with a bunch of people I know, 3which waqs really cool. They also won "Best of DC" and I think they deserve it.

http://www.buddyjackson.com/48hours/index.html

I'm pretty jazzed because I got recognized for writing, which is how I started out on this crazy train. It feels fantastic.

Also, I had tons of people I didn't know rolling up to me saying, "You're the Women's Studies guy, right?" which means we've got buzz.

All in all, a great night.
