Ways to raise money to support my various nefarious activities in the publishing industry, keep me in booze, and pay off the massive debts I've accrued the last three years because I'm stupid enough to believe in literature.
One:
My Amazon Storefront! Updated weekly (or thereabouts) as I haul out a ton of books from my storage units:
www.amazon.com/shops/janus808
Two:
Buy my books! For yourself and for your friends!
http://www.sfwp.com/the-books
Three:
The Amazon Wishlist! (Material acquisition is good because I have no family or lovers)
http://amzn.com/w/3BYGPOBDWO127
-
Drugs are bad.
-
Thank you. Help me heal by choosing one of the above support options!
-
I choose option 1
-
I chose both option 1's.
-
Thank you! The books will ship out tomorrow morning.
-
Go to each of the book pages on Amazon, scroll down to "Tags," and then just click on the little boxes by each tag. That's all. That helps our ranking in those specific search areas.
The Dangerous Joy of Dr. Sex and Other True Stories (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0977679934?ie=UTF8&tag=santafewriterspr&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0977679934)<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=santafewriterspr&l=as2&o=1&a=0977679934" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />

Jesus people! Do this! It takes a second, it costs nothing...

A few additions...

I want to read Moody Food again.
Great novel.

And some DVD updates! All my old Space: 1999 dvd's (thanks to the person who got me the 30th anniversary mega set off my wish list.)
-
I've been able to ignore how formats work when I have Office 2007. It's pretty ballin'.
-
I'm just thankful that liberal arts teachers at small schools really don't give a damn...and that I was taught MLA from as far back as grade school.
-
I'm just thankful that liberal arts teachers at small schools really don't give a damn...and that I was taught MLA from as far back as grade school.
Oh, my profs cared. But I was a psych major, so all my psych profs required standard APA format for all our papers. After the first few, it comes naturally and you just get it right automatically.
I also had MLA beat into me all the way through high school, so that helped too.
-
APA format's a pain in the ass.
-
It wasn't the format that bothered me, it was that the papers were so god awful boring to write.
-
You wouldn't think that with psychology, would you? I mean, Hannibal Lector must have written great papers...
-
Yeah, I know right? Some of them were interesting I guess, but not many.
The absolute WORST were papers for Statistics class... Jesus Christ. I think Stats was maybe the worst academic experience I can remember.
-
All reasons why I stuck with history. Every single paper and essay was fun.
-
Yeah! And, of course, history professors are more concerned with what you are actually saying rather than whether you've got the format down.
-
Kind of shows psychology for the soft science it is: Train folks not in technique, but simply in publish-or-perish thinking. Which is the purpose behind all that format shit. Get into journals and build your rep with long, insane, peer-reviewed articles about how we all have favorite colors.
-
Well, Psychologists (and a lot of Psych students for that matter) are fiercely defensive about people calling it a "pseudo-science", so I think they try to hide the pseudo aspects of it amid a bunch of scientific jargon and formatting to make their theories seem more valid.
-
wow, sounds like we should have more vocational school type psychologist training. Shrinks need to know how to help people, not how to publish. christ, who publishes? Like, less than 1% of practicing psychologists? Get a goddamn phd, or at least a masters, if you want to write papers for a living.
-
Yes, clinical psychology is where the teaching fails, I think. But you're crazy if you get into clinical psychology. Talk about getting nickel and dimed.
-
You're crazy to get into any kind of psychology to make a living... you pretty much have to get a PhD if you want to do anything with it at all, and once you have the PhD, the only thing you can do is be a therapist or a professor... and if you're a professor, you have to publish every year or so or you lose your tenure.
-
i haven't paid under $110 an hour for therapy since ... shit, 1995? Maybe since 1991, but I don't remember what I paid back then.
you can absolutely make a living practicing psychology. in DC at least, they often charge the same rates as psychiatrists.
-
My papers were in nice Times New Roman, font 12. They asked for double-spaced, but I refused to go more than 1.5 spaced.
-
i can't remember writing any papers for college. maybe some 2 pagers for a fluffy intro to logic freshman class.
-
Oh yeah, I agree that therapists make a good living, but the amount of work and dedication it takes to become a therapist is ridiculous. My profs in college pretty much straight up told me that I'd never be able to do anything with my psych major because my grades weren't good enough. Programs, particularly grad level, are so competitive to get into that a lot of schools can admit entire classes of 4.0 students... basically, unless you're making A's in psych, you're never going to do anything with it beyond armchair diagnosing your friends and pretending you know what's wrong with your crazy aunt.
-
Oh! The latest research on what clinical shrinks make:
http://research.apa.org/t5salaries07.pdf
Now, remember, for the private practice folks, that you're taxed nearly at 50%. Plus you have to pay the State Licensing Board(s), and insurance out the ass. To get insurance, you usually have to belong to APA or you're paying twice as much. Then you have to belong to the State Psychological Association. And spend $1000+ each year to get recertified.
-
How are private practice folks taxed more? I'd expect them to deduct gobs of business expenses and get taxed similar or less to group or hospital shrinks.
and wow, that's really low. i'd love to see a regional breakdown but wow, that's still really low.
-
Anyone running their own business is taxed more. The government fucks you if you're self-employed. The (largely hidden) self-employment tax can be anywhere around 10-15% on top of the regular taxes.
God forbid if you have staff.
Oh, and deductions are a myth. Sure, you get a percentage back. But, as with anything to do with taxes, getting money back means that you're not making money.
-
I've been writing all semester, either scripts, papers, responses, essay tests, or whatever. It's gotten to be a little much. But switching to gender/sexuality studies, my grades have consistently improved.
-
SPeaking of women's studies, my Women in Art History class is dreadfully pompous.
-
I love sodality and identity in papers.
That and the neurological physical manifestations of metaphysical learning in the brain.
-
Has everyone pre-ordered this yet?
SAY YES
It's $11.20. Preorder now and get 5% off. Come on, losers.
Oh? You don't live in America? Nice try.

-
I'll preorder it as soon as I'm back in the black. I'm in the red from putting a fat-ass down-payment on my car.
-
Preorder several copies, because it's a great Christmas gift!
-
I really want to get one, but it sounds like there's a lot of great buzz around the book and I'd hate to take a copy from someone who could really make an impact among their friends and family members when they got it. So I'll just put it off for now.
-
Ha ha. Funny Matt.
There are many copies. And I have a Plan.
-
Plans change, Gaius. God changes.
-
Next person to make a BSGay reference is banned.
-
So say we all!
-
I'm sorry, it has the word sex in the title. I'm a good Christian, we try to avoid that topic.
-
Even though we must be fruitful, and multiply.
-
If it was called "The Dangerous Joy of Dr. Multiplication" then we would be fine.
-
The Dangerous Fruitfulness of the Lord's Prayer.
-
I'm sorry, it has the word sex in the title. I'm a good Christian, we try to avoid that topic.
Hahaha. Christians are the most sex obsessed of anyone I know:
They vote, even for Bush, based on gay marriage. Not to mention condoms in Africa and in schools. I submit that Christians are far more ruled by sex than 99% or more of the atheist population.
-
I don't understand those Christians very well.
-
Neither do we, man, neither do we.
-
I don't understand those Christians very well.
It's simple: they're cunts.
-
I don't understand those Christians very well.
It's simple: they're cunts.
Just like everyone else.
-
Most (certainly not all) atheists are less self-righteous and more live-and-let-live.
But I'll grant you, 99% of the world's population, atheists included, is still a cunt.
-
Most (certainly not all) atheists are less self-righteous and more live-and-let-live.
But I'll grant you, 99% of the world's population, atheists included, is still a cunt.
I'd say 60% are genuine cunts, day-to-day.
The other 40% are mixed between people who aren't and people who are cunts when they feel like it or need to be one.

Wait... did I sound vaguely optimistic there?
-
it's okay, I actually agree, so I'll call it realistic.
-
My Amazon Storefront! Updated weekly (or thereabouts) as I haul out a ton of books from my storage units:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/shops/index.html?ie=UTF8&sellerID=AZP54JCRIN5YL
Made a big run today and added tons of books. Lots of fantasy from my childhood, some sci-fi and horror. Everything...including weird religious stuff.
-
elizebethan world picture: how good and useful is it?
-
It's a tiny book. Assigned as (one of many) textbooks for that class. In that context, it was useful. Though I don't know what use it would have outside of the academic circle. I lowered the price to a penny (plus shipping), but you can just come over and pick it up, if you want. Save on shipping.
-
There are a few I should do that with, really. When's a good time?
My aunt gave me all the Myth series as they came out. That was fun, but when I tried to re-read them as an adult I couldn't pass the 2nd chapter.
-
Yeah, it's all kid stuff.
Whenever is fine. Call ahead. Sunday morning, maybe?
-
Oh, and you can't have them all for free! Just the impractical ones. I'm trying to put my kids through college, man.
-
i know. Some of what I wanted was over $2. I just figured I'd save the shipping and say hello.
-
Well, that's fine! Also free tonight, though planning to crack into the booze pretty soon. Been working solid since 5am....
-
ah, that would have worked except i'm... still at work, and just made plans with the gf
-
Added collectible copies of Wars of Heaven.
-
I'm pulling a Nacho and working 12 hours or more today.
-
Which is something that directly involves Wars of Heaven.
-
i was mostly grousing, but it fit into me continuing to have obstacles to coming over
-
I'm not home, anyway.
Besides, the real money in the Amazon used store is the shipping (since I ship out of work and pay nothing).
-
Yeah, that's the problem I have. If I can't make it to the post office during regular hours (so I can pay media mail rates), I lose money on some books. I'm no longer going to sell anything worth less than $10. Amazon takes too big a cut for me to justify selling innane shit.
-

Buy me Dr. Who DVD's because I'm all caught up on my current holdings. You can even buy used. And I'll send you something from my storefront in exchange. Also, I love you.
-
So my Amazon Associates account says that someone downloaded the Ballroom Blitz MP3
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TRVDNC/103-4828361-2581455
I got 9 cents off of that referral. That's awesome. Everyone should go download tons of MP3's.
I'm actually only one item away this quarter before I jump to the next earnings tier.
-
So, yes -- just shopping at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2F&tag=santafewriterspr&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325)<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=santafewriterspr&l=ur2&o=1" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> earns me Affiliate pennies. So whenever you want to go to Amazon, use that link above!

Two:
Review the books on Amazon and elsewhere!
So some of you have read Dr. Sex by now, yes? Hit those Amazon reviews!
-
I bought 3 cd's this week through your little Amazon link. Enjoy that extra $0.25 buddy.
-
Yay! I'm going to get a handful of Dr. Pepper!
-
oh boy, I just pre-ordered Gears of War 2, let me re-do that.
-
Another way to support me/SFWP/GS:
Got a writer friend? Encourage them to participate in the 2009 Awards:
http://santafewritersproject.blogspot.com/2008/08/2009-literary-awards-program.html
The prizes will probably be $1750 for the grand prize, and $1000 each to two runner-ups. No strings attached.
-
I got even more pennies to Nach because I dropped the extra $10 on Gears of War 2 Limited Edition. I get a gold-plated gun to use online! woot
-
Pennies! Pennies for me!
Speaking of which, I should probably go cash in these change jars. I'm probably like that old beggar in Germany or wherever who had a million Euros in pennies.
-
Here, I did a Barnes and Noble affiliate thing for people who hate Amazon.
And it was really complicated and stupid and involved.
Moody Food (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Moody-Food/Ray-Robertson/e/9780977679904/?itm=4&afsrc=1&lkid=J26685116&pubid=K178751&byo=1)

And look at all that sad crap on my wishlist!
Used items are fine.

I fixed the link to my Amazon store: www.amazon.com/shops/janus808

Yep.

So who got me "Shadow of the Silk Road"? Arrived today from my wish list, but no information on the sender. Third party sale.
Thank you, though! Feed my travel obsession...feed...feed...
-
welcome, nach.
-
Excellent! Thank you.
-
Ah! And another third party item -- JG 26: Top Guns of the Luftwaffe. With a beautiful old school cover. That you as well, Matt?
-
yah.
-
Ah-ha! Thanks again.
-
Oh-ho! It's almost that time of year again!
I decided to make the spring a double birthday. May 10th, of course, is when I turn (gasp) 36. However, April 19th is the third anniversary of the surgery. And, from now on, I'm going to celebrate the 19th as if it's a holiday because, god... It is.
So...here's my wishlist! And, as usual, used copies are just fine. No worries.

you'll get nothing but a phone call and you'll like it!

The Trouble with Black Boys, eh, Matt?
Big black sticks in little white slits!
-
D:
-
So which Matt got me Tooth & Nail?
-
I dunno? I don't remember; I haven't bought you anything lately tho.
-
Too many Matts in my life!
-
Just found out today that Nacho's Doc is famous enough to have warranted a shout out to from the show that made MD so proud! (i.e. The Wire 4x08)
-
Oh, yeah. I got the real Dr. House. And it cost upwards of a quarter million bucks.
-
I guess it's more appropriate to bump this thread for my routine beg-a--thon and kepe the "post your wishlist here" thread for everyone else so we can buy each other blow up dolls come Christmas.
So -- May 10th is around the corner!

It's either this or I force you to spank me 37 times while wearing my Matthew Fox fleshmask.
-
You already have a Matthew Fox fleshmask?!
DAMMIT!!!!
-
I can always use another. The one I have has gotten pretty rancid since the season finale.
-
Wow... Have spent most of today working on two birthday articles. One somewhat straight-faced for the other, proper, real name site. That'll be a publisher's blog post on May 9th. Then Nacho and James footloose and insane on May 11th.
The latter will be my first real birthday article in a few years. I've just bene linking to the old ones like the lazy cunt that I am.
There's a weird connection between them, though. Probably because I was writing one while plotting out the other.
Oh, and, http://amzn.com/w/3BYGPOBDWO127.
Also, girls are neat.

Various parcels may or may not arrive over the next week to year...

My wishlist has greatly dwindled over the last year.
