My sister was obsessed with Top Gun the summer it came out on VHS. (1987? '88? It all moved slower back then.) We watched it at least once a week that summer. Kelley McGinnis's legs woke up something in me.

The theme song alone on this fills me with a warm nostalgia. This looks like a straight up soft reboot a'la The Force Awakens, but if the young bucks are half as much fun as Goose, Iceman, and the rest, it'll be a nice ride.

I tried to find a Matrix thread, but couldn't.

The first 45 minutes of Matrix 4 hit all my soft spots. I'd have watched a whole movie of Neo figuring out if he even wanted to be unplugged again. All the meta, "is this sequel really necessary" shit was kind of fun. Then Neo got unplugged and I lost interest. It as just "Hey Lana, can you play the hits... badly?" The production value felt weirdly cheap, like i was watching a SyFy original that ran out of money, so the producer had to blow some rich coke-head to get the rest of the cash. We think of the original Matrix as some CGI masterpiece, but if you watch it now, you realize how much it is just old fashion camera and practical effects. Matrix 4 felt like it was, er, a fake reality made in a computer.

I don't know if it's the most meaningless and unnecessary sequel ever made, but it's certainly needs to be in the conversation.

What I found odd (and amusing) is that the whole point of the movie is that it's the most meaningless and unnecessary sequel ever made. That carries all the way through to the post credits sequence.

I don't think I've been this excited about a sequel since The Force Awakens.
