Interesting english language debate was brought to my attention today . . . If you turn the air conditioning "up," does the temperature of teh room go up or down?

A cock goes UP your air conditioner.

Your turn the speed of the engine up, the car's speed goes up.

Your turn the speed of the engine up, the car's slowness goes down.

You turn the heater up, the air's temperature goes up.

You turn the heater up, the coolness of the air goes down.

You turn the A/C up, the coolness of the air goes up.

You turn the A/C up, the air's temperature goes down.

You turn the cock up, the troat's width goes up.

Or something.

I'm going to say "Make the slowness go down" from now on.

Except, now that I think about it, if the "slowness" goes down, then it's getting slower, right?

You turn up the AC because you're upping the power in order to make the air cooler... you're CONDITIONING the air more powerfully.

Nah, it's like thermodynamics.

E ntropy goes up. Disorder goes down.
Enthalpy goes up. Innertness(?) goes down.

There's an inverse for everyting. Some just sound dorkier than others.

Please reduce your air's enthalpy, please.

That's great, but you're wrong.  You turn up the AC, whether you want to make it warmer or colder.

Again... it's an AIR CONDITIONER... it doesn't imply warmth or coolness.  If it is not conditioning the air enough, you become uncomfortable and then have to turn the AC up.  The end.  Thanks for playing.

I say if you turn up the A/C, the house/car/cock gets colder.

Around these parts, "A/C" just puts out cold air. If you want to be hot, you just turn that off.

What's the difference between "air" and "conditioned air", then?

I though all A/C did was make air cold. If you want more moisture in your air, you select the outside button. Why are there so many different "types" of air?

Then again, this is the country that thinks bottled water is better than tap water...

Nubbs is a southern man -- rattling wall units with settings for the fan, blowing lukewarm air into your face while he sips his mint julep, works the crossword, eats sweet potato pie and the jungle bunnies riot outside, yeee-haw!

Wait, is there a difference between turning the dial up and turning the AC up?

On my window unit, yes!  You rich people have it different.

True, when I need a cooling off, I make my slaves wave their fans faster by turning their cranks, if you know what I mean. (And I think you do.)
