Sci-fi comedy is tough. This is basically Quark, looks like, which is terrible. The Orville simply gave up on the comedy and embraced their "season 8 of TNG" feels. 

But... The cast and the Thick of It pedigree gives me hope.

This was like an episode of Doctor Who without the Doctor showing up to save them all. It even stared a few of the same people, each in their usual Doctor Who roles!
