So...I have a few complaints...

I'm a little worried by the Gizmonic's backstory cold open... Poorly acted and silly. Don't explain the Mads! I mean, the fucking theme song says:

If you're wondering how he eats and breathes
And other science facts,
Just repeat to yourself "It's just a show,
I should really just relax

New theme is fun. Pumped up, Felicia Day being sexy, silly. And glad to see the SOL back in action! But...Gypsy with a midwest accent?

This is very clearly Joel's revival -- the host segments feel like the KTMA days, the bots are all making cracks about Jonah not being Joel, and invention exchanges. Just like the hundred or so past invention exchanges, I fast forwarded.

First movie: Reptilicus. Which is a cult smash in Europe but has a low key American following. Netflix catering to their overseas crowd again! They show the repackaged US version (think the original Godzilla -- the same movie as the original but with an American narrator and a couple of new scenes).

The jokes are pretty lame. I can't tell if MST3K has just not aged well or if a reboot is offensive or if they just picked the wrong movie to launch the reboot.

Anyway...I quit after 10 minutes.

BUT... the other movies this season will keep me watching. Moving into Cry Wilderness now!

Okay...Cry Wilderness is better. The riffs are still not quite as natural or sharp as before but this movie is a bit more approachable in terms of bad movies. They should have started with this.

Yeah. Cry Wilderness wins me over. Still skipping the host segments, though. But I did that for most of the Joel era!

Weird. The second to last host segment of Cry Wilderness is the handing-off-the-torch routine between Pearl and Felicia Day. They probably should have started with that because I was just settling in and accepting the reboot. All this does is remind me that I had to force myself to accept a hackey reboot. Especially since the segment devolves into Pearl and Felicia Day saying how hard it is to mash the old show and the new show together and they make a bunch of reboot jokes.

Yeah...don't hang a lampshade on that, folks. It doesn't help.

So, by episode seven, I'm really happy with this reboot.

Final verdict:

Took me three episodes to recover from the shock of a reboot.
Took me seven episodes to start getting into the host segments and enjoying them.
I ended the season begging for more.
