'Navigation' as in car sat-nav?

I won't need it.

No, the Google Navigation. I even use it for walking directions. It's great fun.

Mmm... Samsung's proprietary backup/connection/sync software is posing some problems.

Been hearing some about this...Droid doesn't force anything on you, so what's the deal with Samsung?

Kies...?

Just getting it to work. Either it doesn't connect/detect the device or else it gets frozen for hours trying to sync backup data.

Got it working finally. Imported all my old iPhone contacts etc.

The Samsung text-client ain't the George... iPhone's text messenger is much better. Am I stuck with the provided text-messenger or can one download alternatives?

Tons of alternatives... But I'm not that well versed in them.

Another Android question:

I have Avast! security and it works well as a security/virus scanner/apps manager etc... but it often tells me - correctly - that my Android often has up to 80 or 90 apps running in the background, even if I haven't been using them.

I can't seem to find any task manager application that allows me to control or limit unnecessary background programs and I think it's probably draining my battery a bit quicker than it should.

Any tips?

Some of it may be bloatware...

Go to settings -- apps -- then "all" and cruise around in there.  Look for shit that you didn't install and tap on it. You can disable (and uninstall) stuff from there.

"My Data Manager" is a free app that will track which of your apps is using up resources, so you can be a bit more tactical in your disabling/uninstalling strikes.

I also use various smart actions (which should come with the phone) to stop apps running in the background -- specifically when my battery hits 20%, and at night, etc...

Also look at apps liek Autorun Manager and Task Killer (both have free versions) that can rein in apps.

Also in settings, go to "Data Usage" and you'll see what's going insane in background data (it's what you expect -- twitter, FB, Weatherbug), you'll have options to limit what it can do (or disable it working in the background altogether).

The other problem is that I have no idea what many of the 'tasks' running actually do... worrying potential for system faults.

Finally found the inbuilt Task Manager on Samsung which had no shortcut or accessible application, I needed to download a shortcut from the Play Store... it's cleared out my RAM and inactive processes. Down to 30% ram usage and 50 apps running now.

And it's back up to 70... with 50% ram usage inside 3 minutes.

Task killer it is then.

Samsung's "short-cut" for task manager Press and hold Home key and tap "Back" arrow key.

This let's you scroll through different apps but has a "Task Manager" button at the bottom.
