The Task Manager helps to clear out the memory, and shut down programs, but within a few minutes the memory and app count is back up... little bits of crap from Samsung that I can't uninstall, bits from my carrier that I shouldn't uninstall, plus loads of system crap... plus these don't count as "active apps" under the task manager.
There will come a day for every man when he will relish the prospect of eating his own shit. That day has yet to come for me.

The stuff you can't install that is crap needs to be "disabled." Which you can do under "all apps" in settings.

You can't stop the system crap. You can (and should) tell some of it (like the browser, etc), to not run in the background.

Also...I feel like you weren't prepared for Android and its troubled relationship with battery life. If you're doing alot of stuff. it's going to eat that battery up. And if you use wi-fi...whew, boy.

Also, syncing apps are a huge drain. This includes Dropbox, gmail, etc. You can go tweak all of those individually.

And get rid of that stupid buzzer feedback shit. Whatever that's called. The vibrate thing when you use the touch keypad or whatever. And things like a fake shutter noise for the camera. All this stuff that's made for idiots. That's a drain.

Some built-in Samsung apps are now disabled, haptic feedback is off, Avast! option to keep CPU running in background is now off....

Let's see if that helps.

I spent a half-hour scouring Youtube for tips on prolonging battery life, directed specifically for my Samsung Galaxy S3.

Using the Task Manager now and then it great for emptying up some free RAM, but the best tip was opening up "Developer Tools" and selecting "Limit Background Processes" to 4 simultaneous 'front-end' - i.e. texts, facebook, phonecall, internet browser - processes at once instead of "standard limit" which is why my app manager was telling me 80 apps were running at once. Now I get about 40 or so apps which govern syncing, call signal, keyboard, etc. - small things.

I also switched from Live Wallpaper to standard, and upon Nacho's behest cut out the haptic feedback n' stuff. There is also the option of Data-Enabler widgets for switching off all 3G/4G/Wifi traffic when not using your phone, without needing to reset the processes themselves.

So, tomorrow will be the dogs of how these changes affect my battery life.

STAY TUNED!

I am, in all seriousness, convinced that the site has become self-aware.

And insane.

So far, my changes seem to have made a fairly good difference.

38% charge left after 17 hours on battery, screen taking 30% for a solid 1 hour 24 usage, Android System taking 23% however... half of which I don't have any idea what they do - any obvious ones I should disable?

Removed the ones you need and should not touch. My comments on others are inline:

any obvious ones I should disable?

Bluetooth Test -- I don't know what this is, but I disable all bluetooth shit. Nor do I ever use bluetooth...

MTP App., -- Decide for yourself! http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/347971-stop-mtp-application-auto-launch-solved.html

Kies via Wifi, -- Related to MTP app, sounds like

Key Chain, -- Discussion here (sounds like you need it): http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-samsung-galaxy-nexus/183409-what-keychain-app-my-galaxy-nexus.html

DSMLawmo, -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863011
Mobile Tracker, -- Probably related to above...

wssyncmlnps, - wtf? -- it's an updater service. You need it.

So far, the few simple steps of disabling some unwanted/used apps, stopping Avast! keeping the CPU running, removing the Live Wallpaper for a standard, and activating the Developer Tool "Limit Background Processes" to 4 has more than doubled my battery life already.

Presently my Samsung is at 17% charge after 23 hours on battery: 34% screen - 2h 35m - with 23% for Android System, 10% for Android OS, 6% for cell standby, 6% for Device Idle... and so on.

EDIT: That's with Sync, Wifi, 3G+/Dual Carrier/4G switched on all day.

Put the Samsung S3 on charge at 15% after 23 hours and 30 minutes on battery, with 2h47 of screen usage, WiFi, Sync, and 3G+ etc. on all day.

I'd say that's pretty good... unless I can do better without reducing too much functionality.

The Wednesday settings test: Positive result!

Now fuck around with "smart actions" and have the phone sleep at night, and shut down various things if the battery goes under 10%.

And buy a PEG! (Which will also help during the apocalypse):

http://store.npowerpeg.com/nPower-Personal-Energy-Generator-devices/dp/B004T3OFQ4

http://www.flashlightuniversity.com/npower-peg/

In my opinion, if we're all really serious about carbon footprints, we should all have a PEG anyway. It's on my post-payoff wishlist.

Of course, it only makes sense if you walk 10 miles a day.

Three weeks post-iPhone now, and I don't miss it at all, software-wise.

Android's inter-connectivity and notifications system is much better than that of iOS, and having sorted out the battery problems I'm presently running at 27% battery life after 1 day and 4 hours, 28 minutes, with a solid 2h34 of screen time.

One thing I'd change about the handset is the speaker placement on the back meaning that a phone lying down muffles the sound and often calls aren't heard until too late. Other than that... I'd quite like something as easily sync'd as iTunes for music and I can't be assed transferring everything.

Two small gripes. That's it.

15% is 1 day, and almost 6 hours with over 3 hours screen time. Pretty good.

One further gripe though, I'd like a better back-up system for my Android than is presently offered.
