I think a lot of younger people are just plain apathetic about everything except pot and gay marriage. Because everything is terrible and has been forever and votes don't matter, etc. So if you want the younger vote, you need to get pot and gay marriage on the ballot. And once those pass, you have to find something else to get kids to the polls. Maybe a Pres candidate like Obama who rides a skateboard and wears a baseball cap backwards.

Agree with most of what you say, about the "why" of voting. We do have early voting in Maryland that includes 7 straight days of voting from 10am to 8pm. Most people would have a day off to work that out in a 7 day period.

So, locally, let's talk about the big casualty of MD going Republican... Namely the Purple Line. Farewell, sane and much needed transportation alternative. Hello to the short-siighted Dulles Bridge Bypass Monster Beltway Project and a million years of fucked up construction and bad traffic that won't be fixed or complete until AFTER the Silver Line is due to connect Dulles therefore making the new Potomac Bridge outdated and pointless!  Yay!

Not sure about that. Still heavily Democratic House of Delegates and Senate. It's only the governor that is a Republican. And really, we were just here with Ehrlich for 8 years to no great effect.

Ah, yes -- early voting! The poorly advertised, rarely spoken of option provided at a tiny select handful of inconvenient locations! The same principle applies -- it's a chore even to do the early voting.

The Purple Line is still in the fight, yes (and Hogan has softened his insane rhetoric opposing it as of...um...this morning!) The Dulles Bridge Project has another voice behind it besides Hogan, though -- Mark Warner is pushing for it. It was one of his larger platforms. So we'll get the Virginia pollution regardless.
