Arthur and Phil Go Off...
« on: October 04, 2012, 04:45:11 PM »
Back in 1990, when I was being raised by the TV and cable was brand new (for our house), I stayed up all night fascinated by the seemingly endless channels (there were 30 back then...).

There was still something of a frontier feel to late night programming and you'd get bizarre little filler material to fill out short movies or shows and get everything lined up to start on the hour. This filler material was fascinating and has stuck with me throughout the long, ageless centuries... (some of it I detailed here: http://www.greatsociety.org/?p=2046).

One such filler was a little known Britcom from 1986 called "Arthur and Phil Go Off...", where comedians Arthur Smith and Phil Nice go on various adventures from a trip to France, to a tongue-in-cheek study of the M1's history, to a search for the Loch Ness Monster. All comic mockumentary stuff. There are only a handful of episodes, and the show died horribly. It's never been released or made available and most folks consider it a failure... But I think it was simply ahead of its time. The comedy frequently drifts into the semi-surreal, and moves between deadpan and slapstick with a strange sort of grace.

I've been searching for it for years, and today decided to do another search... Turns out Phil Nice has a Youtube channel and, sometime last year, he posted all of the episodes.

Here's the channel:
