I'm slowly being driven to give Orphan Black a second chance...

Orphan Black returns on the 19th. Geekdom generallyinsists that this is the most amazing, most mind-blowing show on TV (and, like, ever, and stuff). I've yet to watch it... But io9 has been campaigning extra hard to raise awareness:

I'll eventually settle in with the first season...one of these days...

So, yes... The pilot episode is pretty good. And, apparently, more just intro and not really even close to the meat of the show.

Only 10 episodes. Canadian, not British, but the Shadow-Beeb's pouring money into it. Tatiana Maslany does, indeed, have a bizarre presence. Very watchable.

Geekdom is falling all over itself praising the premiere as BEST EVAR.

I'm on episode two of season one and, yeah, why did I sleep on this show? It still hasn't quite hit the break yet, though. But, from what I gather, this is one of those shows that sort of demands a carefully structured foundation to support the Whedonesque sounding lunacy on the horizon.

By episode 7, season one of Orphan Black is sort of hitting the same note...over and over... But, it's only 10 episodes, so I'll power through.

You know what it reminds me of? It's like they took the original amazing concept for Dollhouse and put it in a horrible Shitgobbling machine to make the Dollhouse that we got, right? Now, the Shitgobbling machine has a strange side effect where it opens up portals to places like the portals lead to in the Phantasm movies where the cast-off and possible alternate ideas from the source idea are thrown haphazardly to rot beneath an alien sun, nibbled on by alien rodents, and largely ignored until, one day, a wanderer stumbled across the idea and put it in a museum. 14,000 Alien Years later, that race of aliens built a dimension-jumping spaceship and decided to return the Shitgobbling refuse to the far Earth future where, luckily, our descendants had invented time travel technology, so they rushed this now ancient document to the modern day and dropped it off in the trashcan in a random bathroom on the executive floor of BBC America where, during a slow day, an executive with explosive diarrhea was looking for something to read while he worked through the worst of his episodes that day and...the rest is history.

The difference between this and Dollhouse? This is hugely popular.

I'm being terribly unfair. It's a very different tone and approach, of course. All the show's failings are deftly saved by Tatiana Maslany who really is quite captivating to watch. Especially when she's in an action scene where she plays all the characters -- a lesbo geek scientist, a prissy paranoid soccer mom, a Brit druggie, and a homicidal Ukrainian.

It is no Dollhouse. Merely the faintest of echoes.

Season two of Orphan Black is basically Utopia. Which is fine since, at this point, I'm convinced that they really have cloned Tatiana Maslany.

With no Utopia Series 2 to watch, I may have to go here to get my fix.

Sadly, you have to drag your ass through 10 episodes of season one to know WTF is going on.

God...I can't wait for Orphan Black to end! Ugh.

I think this show is designed to be addictive not through storytelling, but on this weird, subtle background level. There is a near-subliminal  thing going on here. Like each of the clones have their own music cues that, by the second season's mid-point, telegraphs not only what's about to happen but who's who (if they happen to be masquerading as another clone, which they rarely do).

They also know exactly how to use the Super Scary Ukrainian clone. Always just when you start to wish somebody would shoot our main clone!

Orphan Black check-in! It's going to personal cancellation. I tried -- I really tried -- but I'm not even motivated enough to watch it at work to kill an hour.

Ah well...
