Land Hurricane Vs. Mega Shark/Summergeddon 2012
« on: July 01, 2012, 12:42:55 PM »
Well, it's not a winter storm...but it is a summer tornado in DC! Bread, milk, and toilet paper time! Lines at the gas stations... Madness in the streets.

A brief moment of 80mph winds and Pepco says that a million folks will be out for a week, Verizon loses Virginia, and Comcast is simple MIA. DC dies in the boiling heat, cut off from the world.

I'm sheltering here in Bethesda, watching the mile long line for the gas station move about six feet per hour. The only source of news is the Droid, or the satellite news at the bar.

My favorite news tidbit is that 95% of WVA is without power.

So this why we panic when there's a half inch snowball. You can literally shut down the DC area and 250 miles of surrounding suburbs at any time of year simply by blowing on us.

Split this out...because my power is still out! But at least there isn't a giant oak tree blocking my front door anymore...

Looks like we're going with "Summergeddon".

I just want to point out that, last night, when I went back to my apartment to pick up clothes and supplies, my neighbors were camping out in the courtyard. It really is like the end of the world. There everyone is outside under the stares, grilling and sleeping on the lawn...

We're still without Comcast, too. So I guess I'll just spend today sorting out online business before I go back to Beirut.

Megastorm News Roundup!

Quote
WASHINGTON — More than 3 million people in the eastern U.S. faced a second day of 100-degree (40 degrees Celsius) temperatures without electricity after storms ripped through the region and killed 13. It could be several days before all power outages in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere are restored.

“Unlike a polite hurricane that gives you three days of warning, this storm gave us all the impact of a hurricane without any of the warning of a hurricane,” Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said, after the storms late Friday toppled massive trees onto cars and blocked roads in the nation’s capital.

The National Weather Service said another round of thunderstorms was possible late Sunday and early Monday.

At least six had been killed in Virginia, including a 90-year-old woman asleep in her bed when a tree slammed into her home. Two young cousins in New Jersey were killed when a tree fell on their tent while camping. Two were killed in Maryland, one in Ohio, one in Kentucky and one in Washington.

In West Virginia, 232 Amtrak passengers were stranded Friday night on a train blocked on both sides of the tracks by toppled trees. Amtrak spokesman Steve Kulm said passengers were taken away by buses Saturday night.

Cellphone and Internet service remained spotty Sunday, gas stations were shut down and residents were urged to conserve water. Some major online services also saw delays and disruptions. Netflix, Instagram and Pinterest used Twitter and Facebook to update subscribers after servers were out for hours. Netflix and Pinterest restored service by Saturday afternoon.

Officials focused on the most vulnerable residents: children, the sick and the elderly.

Some sought refuge in shopping malls, movie theaters and other places where the air conditioning would be strong.

LOL...

The people on the radio here yesterday were hysterical, "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE CANNOT GET IN TOUCH WITH ANYONE IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN WIPED OUT"

Are we supposed to debate and discuss if land hurricanes are more awesome than firestorms?

No...Let's talk about how the DC grid is held together by duct tape and chewing gum.

Power's back on...no internet. But, well...at least now I can empty all the food out of my fridge.

With plenty still powerless, Montgomery County just cancelled 4th of July. No fireworks. Free ice instead.

Missus RC and I were having the fireworks conversation yesterday. It's been so dry that fires have to be a concern, no? And with public services tapped out in the Summergeddon aftermath...

If I was a town father, I'd cancel them too.

Official now... All public-sponsored firework displays cancelled.

This means we should all stay very far away from DC tomorrow because all of the MD suburbs are going to trek downtown.

And, of course, all the local golf courses and private clubs had them... Just anything involving the Moco government, I guess.
