Apparently Microsoft have debuted some reportedly impressive "Hololens" VR computer interface. Several sources were all over it.
Except not really. There's no holograms, and it looks like this:

It's basically just a set of goggles that overlay some 3D things on what you see. Which is neat, sure, but it's not a hologram by any stretch of the imagination.
I watched the announcement and it was about the biggest case of over-promise under-deliver I've ever seen. They started with a video saying, "gosh wouldn't it be cool if we could do all these super future things!?" and then they followed it up by showing a lady changing the colors on a shitty 3D model by flailing her arms around. It's like announcing that you made a flying car and then you reveal that it flies out of a trebuchet.
So they have no real applications for it yet — just the goggles. They're expecting other people to come up with compelling use cases for it. Microsoft Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2008.
