I went 7 because I'm scared of 8. Though I am getting a hand-me-down Windows 8 laptop from the grandfather next month. Unless he throws it against the wall before then.

Win 7 is the better bet for a desktop. Win 8 is strangely designed between touch-screen and desktop and ends up making people hate it.

I have 7 and it's nice. I got it for my mom's laptop-to-replace-desktop also, because she is not ready to learn a new OS...
