Recovering Word Files

Recently transferred some seemingly healthy .doc and .rtf files from one thumb drive to another, but once they reached the new host, none of them are accessible and come with a message that says "cannot start the converter WPFT532.CNV."


I have already copied them on to a desktop, but that does not seem to help either. All the files still carry their original weight in kb's, so I'm still holding out a bit of hope. Any tips will be greatly welcome, fellas.

You can go to the MS support site and download that converter.

Though that's a message that says to me the original files were old, old, old... My 1992 WP files that I recently tangled with gave me converter problems (not the one you have). My solution was to open them in Wordpad or notepad and copy-paste the horrible mess that showed up.

Also, a hefty version of Office 2010 should be able to handle all crazy conversion problems.

So, once you copied the gibberish in notepad, where did you paste it and was it good as new then?

Put it back into Word. Looked at it. Decided it wasn't worth cleaning up. Deleted it!
