Quiet Earth reviews the pilot episode...

(Which means a leak can't be too far away, if even the lowly blogs are seeing it.)

The Event – NBCs new sci-fi series debuts this Fall. The network has been pushing this show pretty hard, with constant promos all telling you that various things you see are NOT The Event. Which of course leaves you wondering what really is The Event?

NBC is pushing this show hard because it believes it has a hit on its hands, and after watching the pilot, I have to agree.

A lot have people have talked about this being the next LOST, and comparing it to that show. It’s a fair claim, and to be honest, The Event follows a lot of LOST’s storytelling techniques: characters who are more than they seem, flashbacks (sort of), and an element of the super natural or super science in contrast to the regular world. And while I think it is fair to compare this show to LOST to a point, The Event does a good job of standing on its own. I get no indication that this si some sort of LOST clone. It is its own story, and in many ways, occupies a grander scale than LOST, implying by the end of the pilot that genuine world changing things may be occuring.

A brief note on the flashbacks. While they aren’t flashbacks in the LOST sense, The Event does tell the story in the pilot by jumping back and forth along the timelines of the characters in the show, with the welcome addition of an actual timestamp, so the viewer knows exactly how recently some of these events occurred, making it easier to piece them together.

With any show of this nature, it’s obvious there is some conspiracy occurring, but whether or not such secrets are malevolent or benign is unclear. In fact, what occurs at the end of the Pilot may not even be The Event. I don’t consider this a spoiler, simply because as you watch the show, it is very obvious the story is building toward *something.* What actually happens I won’t say.

I found the characters in the show likable, entertaining, and with was interested enough in what was going on to care by the time I got to the end of the show. The sci-fi or supernatural aspect is just enough to keep me intrigued for the following episode. It’s definitely worth checking out.

Watch the show's promo after the break.

September 20th is the premiere.

They put it up against House. So... Get ready for it to be canceled after 5 episodes.

Oh!  Tonight's the premiere...

New PA? Or X-Files/Fringe/Flashforward ripoff?

Haha!  Oh no!

I'm going in expecting nothing.  Higher on my list tonight is Hawaii 5-0 with Lost alums trying to act like they haven't been hopelessly typecast for the rest of their lives.

Ooh...I'm torn.  It wasn't the best, but it wasn't bad.  It's trying to hard to be the next Lost.  And, for some reason, it had me thinking it was more a rip of The 4400 than anything else.

The first episode could have stood another half hour.  As it is, it's just on the edge of a jumbled mess. Instead of growing with characters or story, we're thrust right away into a super-high-speed sci-fi mystery with a giant cast of characters.  Worse, I'd say about 10 minutes are the same flashback but from different viewpoints...and the same footage.

I'll keep watching. It's a more promising opening than almost every other show this season.  But Hawaii 5-0 was more fun, which might be saying something because that show requires that you put your brain in a jar before you start watching.

I take it we still have no idea what "the event" is?

I take it we still have no idea what "the event" is?

Nope!

Laura Innes is a political prisoner at a secret Alaskan prison that's been run by the CIA for "many years" and at least four presidents.  So she's either immortal or this is a generational prison.  She's the "leader" of a group of 97 other prisoners, all at the same place.

While initially very worried that files have leaked to the president about "the event," we next see her embracing the whole idea and joining the president in Florida for a press conference to reveal to the world what "the event" is. (He decides to free the prisoners "even though they aren't American citizens" and despite the fact that his entire senior staff shits a brick and tells him he'll kill everyone if he frees them.)

Meanwhile, unknown agents are manipulating random people for unknown reasons in a vastly complicated and entirely ridiculous effort to fly a giant jetliner into the president's limo.  As opposed to, you know, shooting him.  Whoever can manipulate these people can also shut down the entire eastern seaboard -- radar, air traffic control, etc.  So it's pretty obvious they can get to him at any time.

As the plane is veering for the limo (LOL), a portal opens up and sucks it and (presumably) two of our major characters away.  There's a sonic boom, then everything's okay.  Laura Innes says "They saved us" and the President, even though he has been FULLY BRIEFED, has read the secret files, and has talked with Innes enough to dress her up and put her on the world stage to tell us all about "them," asks, "Who are they?"

Huh?  So he didn't know and he was putting an alien/monster/immortal/creepy chick up to talk to every press person on the planet?

Laura Innes turns to him and says, "There are some things I haven't told you."

Roll credits!

Facepalm!

You know...having slept on it, I'm prepared to say that the show is awful.  I'm just lying to myself otherwise.

Yeah.  I tried to be forgiving... But, well, The 4400 sucked.  So why are they going to copy it?

Is anyone still watching this? I just heard Kornheiser talk about it on the radio for ten minutes and it sounds pretty cool. After giving a recap up to this point, he gave away the twist to the last episode and I thought it was pretty cool.
