Next season's pilots that do not involve dinosaurs or lasers
« on: April 07, 2011, 06:52:01 PM »
Okay! Non sci-fi discussion so Cass will stop making fun of me.

Upcoming pilots that sound interesting!

Pan Am: set during the clipper period. Which we know better as the Indiana Jones period. It promises to be like Mad Men, which does not sell it to me... But I love that era of commercial flight. It's wild, crazy, unregulated, and largely designed to spy on the Germans and the Japanese. (A "spy subplot" will be part of the series.)

Person of Interest: It's the Lost freakout reunion, penned by Nolan's brother (who wrote Dark Knight). Basically Abrams is doing a thinly veiled remake of Knight Rider. An FBI agent is "killed," then wakes up with a new face and solves crimes for a multi-gajillion dollar above-the-law foundation. Michael Emerson guarantees the Lost audience.

17th Precinct: An awful sounding police procedural that takes place in a world where magic co-exists with normal life. It's on the radar because it's a BSG fan freakout -- Baltar, Apollo, and Six are starring. An obvious attempt to try and take our minds off how terrible it's going to be.

Brave New World: A sit-com from the guy who made The Job and Rescue Me about the drudgery of working at a theme park akin to Williamsburg.

What else is on the radar?

I hear they're rebooting M.A.N.T.I.S.  That should be good.

Homeland! It wasn't on my radar until I heard that Morena Baccarin is in it.

Which is no biggie. We're all over her after the V reboot. But, at some con or something, she said, "I like getting naked in front of the camera, so I'm looking forward to Homeland."

Um...yeah. Fucking downloading.

Jesus Christ... I'm having trouble making it through the first 10 minutes of SMG's "Ringer."

I wonder what it feels like when the best thing you've ever done is Buffy and that was over by the time you were 26? I'm sure she's living well, but talk about a stagnant career.  Poor thing.

Just watched "Revenge" from one of the networks. I never know these days.

It styles itself as "like the Count of Monte Cristo," so that's what got me on board. First episode is a bit rocky... We open with a murder, and then the series flashes back to five months prior where I guess we're going to spend the season.

So what made the Count of Monte Cristo so fun was the whole build-up. By the time you get to the revenge stuff you're well and truly on board because there's been an awesome journey to get to that point. Here, the whole set up is told in flashbacks from our main girl's youth where her father is set up as a terrorist by the evil family corporation where he works. A story telling style that kind of makes us not like our main girl out of the gate because she's a creepy monster for no clear reason, and even when we learn the reason in the last act it doesn't really make sense.  Well...it does. But it's stupid.

Anyway, it's got some good stars and it kept me watching and the girls are pretty. So I'll tune in next week.

But Ringer's news is balanced out by a full season order for Suburgatory (which is getting tired already) and Revenge (which I'm totally addicted to now...so, good!).

Boss. The new Kelsey Grammer drama on Starz. I downloaded it on a lark and it is excellent.

The first episode really blew me away.
