That means it's a bad movie, but because it's Christopher Nolan they feel bad saying that.

Okay... So I have some huge problems with Interstellar.

1) The whole finale (everything after the Tesseract) is clearly added by the studio. It doesn't make sense, it betrays what the movie had been saying up to that point, it's weird, it's sappy, it's impossible, and it's pointless. In fact, I can't decide if it was supposed to be a dream or what. It ruins the movie.

2) The movie forgets and confuses the details of the Lazarus missions:

--Michael Caine tells us that the missions were crewed, like the Endurance, and even shows us the wall of heroes. Then, when we arrive in the pocket galaxy, the Lazarus missions were all, apparently, solo flights.

--When the Endurance arrives at the pocket galaxy's event horizon, Rommily expands on the Lazarus missions and says that there were many of them but only a few made it through the event horizon. It's implied this is because they lacked Cooper's piloting skills yet as soon as they hit the event horizon, the pocket galaxy takes over flight and safely brings you in and all you can do is "record and observe" and this was known by everyone except for the pilot Cooper.

--It's said multiple times that the Lazarus missions were staggered, and yet Mann knew the fate of the other two -- and had spent a decade obsessing about getting to Edmund's World, which was a viable planet. If Mann arrived as the Endurance did and picked up Edmunds' signal saying he'd found a viable world, why did Mann then choose to go to frozen chlorine world? Maybe he knew he would be crucial to Act Two of a Nolan movie.

3) What the fuck NASA?

-- Lazarus is mankind's next to last hope. So NASA sends multiple missions into the pocket galaxy, but there's no way for those missions to report back unless they physically turn around and come home. They don't launch probes, no support vessels are made. It takes NASA another 10 years to make an ark-ship to go figure out whether or not Lazarus made it.

--Plan B makes perfect sense -- the Endurance is the last hope. If the results of the Lazarus missions were successful and the Endurance can't find a way home, then it's capable of seeding the new world. Everyone on board knows this and gets it, and yet Plan B is at the heart of the conflict both on Endurance and back on Earth, with even an implied conspiracy that NASA knew there was no hope and the Endurance wouldn't be able to make it home. Well...yes. Exactly like everyone always said from the get-go.

--Oddly, though, NASA does have a large amount of info about the Lazarus missions, so nothing about Endurance's mission is an actual surprise. NASA even seems to know that three of the Lazarus missions made it and had info on planets.

--Brand's science is constantly off. She's the super-duper schience chick who works out a formula that one hour = 7 years on the waterworld. But then 70 minutes = over 23 years.

--The Endurance has no way of scanning the three planets? I mean, we're not talking Star Trek computers here. They don't have a telescope? The 1980s Space Shuttle was better equipped. Apparently the Lazarus missions were even worse. From the ground, the Lazarus mission that landed on the waterworld thought the skyscraper-sized waves were mountains, and reported as much. Of course, the Endurance crew also look out their window once on the ground and think these waves are mountains. Now, everyone says "OMG WATCH THIS IN IMAX THEATERS OMG!!" but even on a little HD TV screen, you have Brand look at a fucking wave and go, "Let's head to the mountains!" and you're like "huh?"

4) Mankind's future has no future.

--All these planets are on the event horizon of a black hole. The black hole is devouring everything and destroying it.
Spoiler
But...it's also possibly Mankind from the future,
so I guess that's okay. What Gargantua is, exactly, sort of depends on what the movie needs it to be. There's a time dilation that only affects one planet, but then it later is effecting all of them, and then it's later retconned to being an orbital thing that they can use to slingshot or some shit. They're all over the place with this.

--Brand has no choice but to execute Plan B. The human race will arrive in 100 years to find that a genetic super race has colonized their last best hope

5) Weird planetary science that distracts you

--The waterworld is a flat round ball covered in an ocean that's only one foot deep and yet the mile-high waves don't reveal anything beneath the surface and don't move anything that's crashed on the ocean floor?

--Cooper does not get frostbite when he goes gloveless (and maskless) on a planet of frozen chlorine (that's lower than -150 degrees, I looked it up)?

--The desert world has oxygen and can support life but does not currently support any life. So...where's the oxygen come from?

Spoiler
--Future Mankind can create a pocket galaxy, control time, and influence every day of a person's life, but the only planets they can build are the above three. I mean, if you can build a planet, let's maybe put some trees and water on it. At least water! We know you can do water!

Did we all Barbenheimer last month? I Barbenheimered. I Barbenheimered so hard.

Oppenheimer was really really good. Nolan is in his prime. His non-linear storytelling structure actually is a benefit to unfolding a historical piece like this because he can let us know the consequences of some of the actions we're about to see. It really contextualizes the seeming juxtaposition of Oppenheimer's leftist leanings and anxiety about creating the bomb with his insistence that it must be done.

A lot of folks are saying the film loses steam after they detonate the bomb. (Uh, spoilers I guess.) But I found the confirmation hearings / political devaluation of Oppenheimer to be the most thrilling part. It's also the most important, because the whole thing is an exercise in examining the pathology of having to make an unfathomable choice. What happens when you've no choice but to open pandora's box?

We're looking forward to both... But the pandemic shook us out of even thinking about going to a theater. We're now committed streamers, even if it means waiting three months. Plus, all but one theater in walkable range have closed or remain shuttered since the lockdown. So it's actually a get-the-car-out and plan-the-day-around-it chore to go to a theater these days.

No judgement. I don't enter any theatre, live or movie, without wearing a mask. (Where did I catch this last bout of COVID? At the Richard Rodgers Theatre in NYC.)

I'll be curious to hear your take on Oppenheimer. I rarely see anything more than once these days, but I think I might go see it again. Can't stop thinking about it.

Is this the thread to talk about Barbie too?

You guys still go to the cinema?

I just sit real close to my TV.
There will come a day for every man when he will relish the prospect of eating his own shit. That day has yet to come for me.
