Best of the Decade -- TV
« on: December 10, 2009, 11:41:39 AM »
Okay.  We have music and movies.  Now, the best of the decade for television. Shows that trailblazed or changed their genre, and had the most impact. (I won't list UK shows, because then the list gets too long!)

Here's mine, just off the top of my head:

Firefly

The Office (US and UK)

Rome

The Shield

Band of Brothers

Generation Kill

Boston Legal

Cleopatra 2525

Because everybody needs a Terminator-inspired live action Jem, right?  And Gina Torres in a skimpy outfit.

Survivor

While the show quickly became unwatchable, that first season in 2000 was phenomenal.  The last of the "water cooler" shows where you showed up the next morning and talked about all the losers on the island.  For better or worse, Survivor ushered the reality TV craze to the primetime networks.

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Lost

Another deeply flawed show that, nonetheless, has seeped into almost every aspect of our culture.  I'm reading Lost discussions in the Stephen King book, and the daring subliminal advertising campaign in the ABC lineup is definitely a first.  Thanks to the season five reboot, Lost has (surprisingly) become watchable again.

Wonderfalls

A wonderfully quirky, and sadly short-lived, fantasy.

Deadwood

The new Doctor Who

The most successful reboot of a franchise.  The Fugitive failed, BSG failed, V and Prisoner failed... But Doctor Who has become, once again, a massive cult phenomenon.

House

The reboot-a-matic.  I debated not including House, since it's essentially a formula show.  But it's been fascinating to see how each season has evolved.

Breaking Bad

It's Weeds for the intelligent folk.

The Daily Show and South Park are really the only TV I watch with any regularity anymore.

Now we can quibble about whether or not the show needs to be a product of the decade.  Daily Show and South Park are both late 90's.

Now, Daily Show, definitely, flourished in the Bush 2000's.  And also saw a transformation from comedy show to "the only place where I get my news" for so many Americans in this decade.  It has to count, yes?

Actually, I'd say The Colbert Report is teh true Faux news show of the 2000s.

But yeah, the Bush years were indeed thw "golden age" of The Daily Show, though the way they've really been sticking it to Obama of late is quite entertaining too.

See, I can never enjoy the Colbert Report as much as the Daily Show.  It almost takes the gag too far half the time.  And Colbert's intelligence and wit (which makes Stewart so wonderful on the Daily Show) is clouded by the need to play up the character.  You hit that Borat wall after awhile where you think, okay, that's enough for today.

I respect that point of view. I certainly don't watch Colbert as much as I watch The Daily Show. (Which is almost every day.)

Yeah, I wanted to avoid UK shows because there are tons of greats from the decade...

Dead Set is wonderful.  Did you see the Screenwipe episode where Brooker talked all about how they raped his idea and it was a pale shadow compared to the original screenplay?

And if you want to do UK shows that had a huge impact, I would think Screenwipe would be in the top ten.
