Yeah, not surprised. Movies with trailers that good seldom deliver.

A student described the Five Nights at Freddy's video game to me and it sounded utterly terrifying. The movie is... not.

I will say that if i had kids, this would be an absolutely fine horror movie to take them to. (A lot of the reviews called it "entry level horror.") It's creepy in places, and the concept is pretty eerie. Grown-up me had too many writing issues. Characters just show up so conveniently, you just know they're connected to the midpoint or third act twist. It also recycles about 100 horror movie tropes.

Again, for a 12-year-old? Fine. (And to be fair, it's PG-13 so that seems to be the target audience.)

Me? I actually was fighting dozing off.

When I saw the real trailer for Eli Roth's Thanksgiving movie based off the fake trailer he made almost twenty years ago, I thought there's no way a feature version could remotely stick the landing set-up by what's arguably the best part of Grindhouse.

But you know what? It kind of stuck the landing.

I joked to my buddy after the movie that it was "the best horror movie of 2007." At it's core, it's just an old school slasher, a throwback to a different era of horror films. It's familiar, but in a comfy blanket kind of way rather than a "why don't they make something new" kind of way. It's in no way trying to reinvent the wheel. It's also the best Scream sequel / remake ever. (Despite the fact I guessed who the killer was after the first scene, the movie made me doubt that guess multiple times.) It's funny without being too funny, and gory without being too gory. The cast is likable, even if some of the characters are overblown.

The third act gets delightfully weird and comes the closest to fulfilling the promise of that original gonzo trailer. By the way, the movie knows you've watched that trailer and does a mostly good job of subverting your expectations in terms of how you think those scenes are going to play out.

RC says check it out.

Totally Killer is....totally killer! It's in the same family as Happy Death Day. Hot, plucky blonde has trouble with the timeline and is stalked by a slasher.

In this case, the movie takes us back to 1987 for some on-target and totally hilarious "Gen Z girl caught in the 80s" shenanigans. The whole movie is light, fluffy, and pitch perfect. Even the jump scares are well done. Even the 80s references through 2020s eyes were well done. The movie is so self-aware that it's a Back to the Future ripoff that the main hero gal constantly references the movie and is surprised when things aren't as easy for her as they were for Marty Mcfly.

Just damned perfect all around. Turn off your brain, mix up a cocktail, and check it out.
