Word trickled out last week that 3D Realms -- which has been the butt of game industry jokes for more than a decade now for its lack of progress on the game Duke Nukem Forever -- has closed its doors. The company's terse shutdown announcement is here. http://www.3drealms.com/news/2009/05/goodbye.htmlIt's an anticlimactic collapse for the Garland software house, which struck gold in 1996 with Duke Nukem 3D, an irreverent first-person shooter that made the gum-chewing titular Duke a household name. The sequel, Duke Nukem Forever, was announced in 1997.The fact that, 12 years later, Forever still is nothing more than screenshots, animation demos and a few minutes of mediocre in-game footage is probably all the explanation we need for why the company didn't survive.
3D Realms: Publishing rumours are untrue Monday, 18 May 2009 12:52 Duke Nukem 3D Realms' co-founder Scott Miller has not only denied Take-Two's $30 million offer, but also that they didn't review one penny from the $12 million Take-Two is suing them for. After the closure of 3D Realms, Take-Two, the company that owns the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever, reportedly offered $30 million for the game; it was ultimately turned down. However, 3D Realms' co-founder Scott Miller has defiantly refuted the claims, telling Shacknews that the studio "would have taken this offer without hesitation" and that the rumours are "Not. Even. Close." to reality. Take-Two is now suing 3D Realms for not delivering the highly anticipated Duke Nukem Forever after Take-Two bought the game's publishing rights from Infogrames in 2000 for $12 million. However, according to Miller, 3D Realms "didn't get a penny of that [$12 million]." "This, along with so much else, is 100% spin, being eaten up by those who have no clue whatsoever." Miller's statements match up with Take-Two's previous statement that they had not been providing on-going funds for the game's development.
I vaguely remember the first game... it was kind of like Contra, right? Why would Raimi have grounds for suing them?
