So...the Magnum PI reboot.
I'm torn. They were insanely loyal to the show -- same title music, same sort of title sequence (though super short). All the characters are there. Island Hoppers and the same chopper are there. Zeus and Apollo love/hate Magnum. We get the old Ferrari for most of the episode, but it dies in order to be replaced by Robin 3 (a modern black Ferrari vs. the Jeep Wagoneer in the original show).
TC and Buck Green are the only characters truly unchanged. Tanaka is limited by his need to be the avatar for a Hawaii 5-0 crossover. Rick is still a loser, but he's a bit more capable and brave.
And Higgins... Hot, sexy, ass-kicking Higgins. So, I don't mind. Except the show seems so excited that they gender-swapped Higgins, it's impossible to get away from it. They need to just do it and move on (like with Starbuck in BSG). Yes, very nice, you made a male role female -- NOW JUST TELL THE STORY! It's not a big deal! Half the world is female!
Worse, they objectify her. We get yoga pant shots, and diving necklines, and a smoking proto-romance between her and Magnum. Yuck.
So the pilot episode is the same script as the original pilot. A scene-by-scene reshot, updated, of course, for 40 years later. Also updated in that they white-washed it. Instead of a drug deal gone bad, there's a madcap, half-written gold heist in progress. Bad GIs stole Iraqi gold...and...shipped it by boat...to Hawaii...and...the boat sank...and...????
Anyway, it's dumber than a box of dumb things.
Meanwhile, magnum is a little pussy with no body hair and waxed, smooth skin. Weird.
I will watch the next episode. If only to see if they're simply going to fan-film their way through all the original scripts for 7 years.
