hmm.... that is a good question.  I know that you can stream mp3 playlists through Winamp... or at least you used to be able to.  I'm not sure if you can stream a live broadcast though... someone with more technical savvy than me probably knows.

That sounds like it might be what I'm looking for... I will have to try out WME when I get home tonight.

Okay... I can either a) record files, upload them to sendspace where you can download them or b) try to configure winamp so I've got a shoutcast you can tune into... but, you have to have winamp.

Haha.  Nice.  Lots of static, though.  Hard to hear.

You know, whenever I hear these short wave people, I can't help but picture some old man in a cabin somewhere in a hostile and unforgiving wilderness.

Which is why you'll be listening to me someday.  "The Voice of Great Society!"  I'll sit there and act out old Star Trek scripts or something.

Nice!  I'm getting Radio Havana now... and I'm picking up the same guy I was hearing the other night.  The show is called DXers Unlimited and I guess it's on every few nights.  The guy's name is Arnie Coro (I think)... it's hard to hear.

Radio Havana

He's reading emails from Canada now.

Ha! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnie_Coro

Quote
Arnaldo Coro Antich, aka Arnie Coro, is a Cuban radio host, academic and popular amateur radio operator. He is a cofounder of Radio Havana. He hosts the English language Radio Habana show DXers Unlimited which broadcasts twice a week. He is also a professor of broadcasting at the University of Havana.

His amateur radio call sign is CO2KK. In Cuba, Antich is considered "the guru of ham radio operators" and is credited for increasing interest in Cuban amateur radio operation and has garnered many fans in the United States. Due to the difficulty in acquiring radio equipment, Antich has managed to assemble his radio equipment from pieces of old radios, Soviet-era television sets and fax machines.

While on a 48 hour leave from his military duties, Antich witnessed a Douglas B-26 Invader finishing a strafing run on an airport near his home, alerting him to the start of the Bay of Pigs Invasion. Antich was also involved in the capturing of prisoners, some of whom were former schoolmates, in the Zapata Swamp

So, please forgive me for dorking out all over this thread.  I appreciate you guys putting up with it. :)

I just read this!

Features of PC Controlled Shortwave Receivers

PC controlled shortwave receivers can perform a wide variety of operations. While some PC shortwave receiver options can be found on stand-alone receivers, most are unique to PC controlled receivers.

Access to online, real-time databases is one of the most useful options on PC controlled software receivers. Users can quickly determine which stations are on the air at any given time. Shortwave transmission databases also allow users to quickly identify stations (a valuable tool, especially if the station broadcasts in another language).

How PC Controlled Shortwave Receivers Work

PC controlled shortwave receivers build on the scanning ability of older shortwave receivers. Here is an outline of how they work:

1 The user sets the shortwave receiver to scan from one end of the frequency range to the other.
2 The PC then displays a graphic plotting the signals and displaying the strength of each signal.
3 The user can now click on the graphic with the mouse pointer to tune into that frequency with the shortwave receiver.

Someone in the SA thread posted a picture of the signal graph, but I didn't realize what it was.  This sounds like a much better way to figure out what's going on.

Voice of Russia was coming in earlier... I got some fairly interesting shit before it faded away.  Radio Havana guy said sunspots were up and would hinder transmission... guess he must be right.

Voice of Russia 1

Voice of Russia 2

Voice of Russia 3

The first two files are about 2.5 minutes and the last is close to 10.  I recorded the first two and it was interesting enough that I bumped the last file to record for 10 minutes.... only the signal faded into obscurity towards the end.

It's interesting shit though, even though I know very little about it.  It's Voice of Russia, so I assume it's sanctioned by the government... but they are transmissions not only in English, but English spoken, at least in part, by people who sound American.  The last clip in particular makes me think of the Russian spies who try to kidnap Chevy Chase and Dan Akroyd in Spies Like Us.

You can listen to VoR online...you know, if you're the type who keeps a shrine to Putin in your closet.
