Picked up Radio Havana last night. The guy was speaking English, so I'm not even sure he really was in Cuba, although he claimed to be. The station can only be picked up at night due to sunspots or something. I haven't quite figured out how all of that works yet... he was giving instructions on how to make an external antenna from coax cable, then he read an email he got from someone all the way in Wisconsin. He also went on to explain that the reason he was coming through as far north was due to the fact that sunspot activity is almost zero. I guess if the sun's more active, the signal doesn't travel as far or is drowned out by radio waves from the sun.
Anyway, I'm sitting in my office now soldering lengths of copper wire together to try and make a ghetto antenna when I get home. Supposedly anything clipped onto the end of the supplied whip will improve my signal. I guess we'll see.
I also picked up some Russian propaganda on Saturday night that was kind of neat... it was a bunch of "America is stupid and barbaric" kind of stuff, but it was in English... so again, I wonder about the source. I guess if they were based in America, they'd get shut down... but if they're based in Russia, then why are they speaking in English? Seems to me that maybe these are Russian broadcasts designed to be heard by Americans listening to shortwave.
Anyway, interesting shit so far. I've yet to pick up any pirate radio or numbers stations, but hopefully with some extra wire attached, I'll be able to hear more.
