Yes.  Well worth queuing up.  It's nothing truly spectacular, but it's certainly a somewhat unique (and strangely powerful, in the end) entry into old school WWII movies.

Dude, this sounds awesome.  I will definitely check it out.

Have you seen Midway or Tora! Tora! Tora! ?  The special effects are AMAZING.... you watch the airfields blowing up and it's like, shit... I guarantee you stunt men lost limbs doing those movies.

Well, both Midway and Tora used the same footage...which is actual footage. John Ford was with the Marines on Midway, filming in color, in 1942, and put together the propaganda film (which was remade in the 70's, using the same model shots and the same real-life battle shots).  The 70's Midway had no original effects -- if it wasn't actual battle footage (which we're now seeing again "for the first time" in Discovery's WWII in color or whatever), it was a mix of effects from that original Midway, Tora, Tora, Tora, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, and Away All Boats.

Some huge controversy around the Midway remake because of that.  Actually sunk the filn (ho ho) in the box office.

So your airfields being blown up are real airfields really being blown up.  And your extras losing limbs are actually drafted farm boys who had never left Idaho till 1942 and you're watching them die.

As to the effects -- the 1942 Midway got an Academy Award for them.  It is, actually, amazing that those model shots could be reused in 1976 and still look so good.  But...the 1942 Midway was a government funded (and the sky was the limit) propaganda film.

Well, I don't think that's entirely true.  I read about the movie and, yes, those are real planes being destroyed, but I think that the destruction was set up specifically for the movie.  It was my understanding that it wasn't actual war footage being used, but real planes from the war that had either been junked or captured by the allies... I could be wrong, though.

It is completely obvious in both that they used some of the same stock footage in each movie.  Tora is, in my opinion, way better than Midway.

Oh yes, Tora is much better.

And, yes, there are lots of sets and models and set-up scenes (again, that's what the Academy was for in the 40's version).

Some good points on how they set them up:

But that John Ford footage is all real.  He was with the guys on Midway Island itself.

so, I knew it was going to suck, but I sat beside the girlfriend and watched The Lovely Bones anyway.  It's like What Dreams May Come if it was written by Kristen Stewart.  Did Peter Jackson have to make this film or something?  It did give me some more evidence for my theory that great directors can make mediocre actors great, but left to their own devices actors like Mark Whalberg and Rachel Weisz will always drift into unwatchable blandness.

Yes, he did have to make it!  That's something he's said several times in the LotR interviews and what not.  He sold his soul to make those movies.

Lionsgate buys the entire Terminator franchise for just 15 million.

I'm a bit stunned that the franchise has fallen so far it's now the penny stock in Hollywood.

Times are tough in Hollywood and Terminator Salvation didn't make all that much money.

Lionsgate has a lot of respect for genre fare, so maybe this is a good home.

Hi!

Mel Gibson says he'll be in Mad Max IV.

Okay, I'm off to the suicide hut.  Bye!

He's too old. Would you balk at a reboot?

He's too old.

I'm glad a concern like that was in place for Shatner and Ford!

Oh, wait...
