At home, I'm more frightened by horror movies,

Me too, but I absolutely *love* the tribal aspect of watching those movies in a big crowd; the nervous laughter, the singular scream. Movies are meant to be a communal experience. It's why Edison's single viewer nickelodeon device never got off the ground.

I get you on the comforts of home though. There's something to intimacy of it all when you're watching the right film.

It's precisely the tribal aspect that makes it bad for me. I find that people  are all either responding out of sync with me, or are trying to play along with what's expected of them. Like, with Paranormal Activity, the trailers are more about the audience reaction. Many other horror movies do this as well. So, now, we get theater audiences who are simply being told how to behave and are behaving accordingly.

There is quite a parallel to going to a live sporting event. If you can see every play, rewind, slo-mo, multiple angles and not have to sit outside, travel to the game, pay for parking.
FedEx Field where the Washington football team plays is taking out seats every year. Some because of fielding a bad team for years and years, but a lot because of inability to compete with the living room experience.

The ID2 description sounds like...the first movie...

Quote
After "Independence Day" redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Oh my. This looks strangely good.

You know what the ID2 trailer does? It makes me excited for the Stargate reboot.

Joy leaked! So now I can get my J-Law fix five days early.

It's kind of cool right now. The story about a beautiful Hollywood actress who plays an ordinary woman who invented a mop.

So...The Big Short.

It was amazing.

And infuriating.

So Sisters was fucking hilarious. It's a party movie for 40-somethings who are afraid they've grown up, and it even turns the required predictable ending into something that's palatable.

I don't know why they programmed it to open opposite Star Wars.

Lots of Super Bowl trailers from las night, but the Jason Bourne one turned my dials up the highest. Also, it's a crime that we have no dedicated Bourne thread.

We also got another look at the Independence Day sequel.

An excellent, nostalgia-fueled article on Chan's Police Story franchise -- both the high point and the low point in his career.
