Yesterday, from Danny Boyle and everyone else, about a low rent musician who wakes up after an accident to a world that doesn't know who the Beatles were is a seriously lovely and charming movie. It's funny, it's touching, it's elegantly beautiful and there are a few tearjearker moments that are tearjerkers in just the right way for people of a certain age/Beatles fans.

Random movie reviews:

JoJo Rabbit... The best pure satire in decades that somehow manages to have a deep emotional core. It threads a needle you didn't even know existed. The kids are all fantastic and between this and Marriage Story, I'm becoming convinced Scarlett Johansson is the best actress of her generation.

Logan Lucky... Steven Soderbergh's carer has just sort of slipped by me. I put off watching Magic Mike because I thought it was softcore porn for women, but when Missus RC finally convinced me to give it a shot, I was floored by it's emotional depth. Yet, it all made sense when i saw it was directed by Soderbergh. Logan Lucky was the same thing. Somebody told me to watch it because is a West Virginia heist movie. Again, I was fucking floored by ow funny it was. (If not totally ridiculous.) Come for one of the best heist movies since Thomas Crown affair but stay for 100 cameos and  Daniel Craig in his most gonzo performance ever.

My favorite movie of 2020 came out in 2016. The first half is almost perfect. The second half is far less so, but by that point you don't care. Can we like a movie by Max Landis or is that bad now?

My fav movie of 2020 is 2019's Yesterday. Perfect in every way from start to finish.

Our Matrix thread was in the old forums, but a trailer hasn't made me this giddy since probably the one for "The Force Awakens."

Man, did I love Don't Look Up. Lots of Strangelove comparisons which aren't exactly on the nose, but I get it. It's funny and sad, and oh so of the moment. I don't know how it ages, but it's got its finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist.

Who knew middle aged DiCaprio was going to be so fucking nuanced and perfect? Meryl Streep steals the show. Or does Cate Blanchett? Or does Jonah Hill? I don't know, man. Everybody is great in this.

I thought it was stupid, too long, and insulting. Half the actors phoned it in from their bathroom, and what's with the 20 minute Ariana Grande concert? If it were a 90 minute movie it would have been amazing. As a two and a half hour movie, it was just WTF?

Jennifer Lawrence stole every scene though.

I'll give you it was too long, but everything is too long these days. (And the Ariana Grande concert is stupid, but if you listen to the lyrics, it'a part of the joke.)

I don't know. I liked it. I thought it was good cinematic social satire in a way I have seen for a bit.

I remember back when we liked movies and we didn't have to apologize for everything that was wrong with them. We live in the era of "It's great, but....you have to choke through the hour's worth of unwatchable filler to get to that one joke that's so good!"

I've just discovered the Netflix movies written by bots and they're hilarious.

Whether you like Shakespeare on not, Joel Cohen's Tragedy of MacBeth is absolutely gorgeous. Visually, it's the Lighthouse meets 300. Stunning to look at. Performances are pretty good too. It's on Apple+ if you have it.

Also, I'm now subscribed to enough streaming services that I might as well be paying for cable again... which I fucking predicted ten years ago.

Will try it out!

We just cut the cord. We were paying Xfinity $350 a month. We went with Youtube TV and get all the same services, plus Netflix, Paramount Plus, HBO Max, Showtime, Hulu, Disney, Epix, and Peacock for $96 a month. It's amazeballs. Unlimited DVR, faster response times, less heartache and screaming at the TV...

Don't know how much you've been keeping up with Robert Eggers (The VVItch, The Lighthouse), but I think he's one of the most fascinating directors working. Came from an Art Direction background and his movies are just gorgeous. Not for everybody, as he's way into dream logic and myth. The stories just aren't laid out for you. Lynchian in that it take a little bit of work on your part to piece together what it is you're seeing

I finally caught The Northman last week, and it's well worth a watch. Because of the (increased) budget, Eggers had to make his story more linear and you feel his instincts struggling with that. His dream logic scenes have more plot hole significance, and yet his costume and scenic design is so meticulous, the big budget realism seems at odds with his more esoteric impulses. It's a medieval revenge story that feels like a fever dream. If the main character's name "Amleth" does't give away where all the story points come from, you'll quickly realize Eggers wrapped his story in a more familiar one so he could get away with a wee bit more trippiness.

I loved it, but what he does fires all my synapses. Worth a look if you get a chance.

The Northman is on my list for sure. I hated The Lighthouse mainly because the actual historical story is even more crazy. The Witch was fun, though.
