Unbreakable II/The M Night General Thread

It’s no secret M. Night Shyamalan has been working on a sequel to Unbreakable and Split, and now it’s official. The film is titled Glass, and he’s getting the whole band back together.

Shyamalan confirmed original stars Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson will be back; along with James McAvoy and Anya Taylor Joy from Split. The title implies it will be focusing on Jackson’s super villain, and with the cast list locked in, it looks to fully blend the worlds of the two films. Both films worked because they were small stories, so turning it into something bigger will be one heck of a challenge. But, Shyamalan hasn’t blown it yet (at least with this franchise). So, fingers crossed.

Shyamalan said the studio is planning to release Glass on January 18, 2019.

Funny. The Village came up while in LA. We decide it was M. Night Shyamalan's masterpiece that was ruined because we all spent the whole movie trying to figure out the twist. I think it's good too.

The coolest thing about Split is the last minute. But, yes, you need to see it before the next movie.

So Glass was a fucking mess. I wasn't really a fan of Split, but I was willing to forgive it. Glass felt like a film school project inspired by all the previous movies, and tried to clumsily retcon the whole thing. Like Mr. Glass is actually a hero? All the super heroes are the result of a dark witchcraft masonic government society's experiment.... Blah. I want every single second I spent watching that movie back.

I had a feeling that one wasn't going to be all it was shook up to be. Unbreakable was great because it predate the gonzo comic book movie tidal wave. Now, it's just more of the same thing being piled on.

Yes and no. It's still quite fun, and Willis doing his understated Willis is great, and Sam Jackson is ageless, and the idea of the pre-comic-book-movie-flood origin story is good. The best part of all is that it's a self-contained origin story that doesn't require a knowledge of the greater, expansive, universe.

But... It does feel a little bit like returning to Star Trek TMP now, after 40 years of the franchise exploding and fighting wars and moving at warp speed on a motorcycle to heavy metal music. So, basically, returning to your comment above about the tidal wave. The old resort has been rebuilt, and it's still fun and pretty but, at night, as you lie on your silk sheets and watch the bamboo fan lazily sweep around above you, you can't help but remind yourself that 150,000 people died in the tidal wave last year.
