I almost put this in the football thread, but feel it has as much o d with local politics as anything else.

For the record, as a fan, I have no problem with a name change and actually feel they should have done it a long time ago. We're the nation's capital after all.

Also, Red Tails is pretty cool.

Council To Consider New Name For Redskins

The drive to change the Washington Redskins' name will take a significant step forward when D.C. Council member David Grosso introduces a resolution calling for the team to eliminate what he calls it "a derogatory, racist" moniker.

The "Redskins" name, which the franchise used while it was still based in Boston in the 1930s, has generated quite a bit of controversy recently. Behind star quarterback Robert Griffin III, the team's popularity has skyrocketed, and there has even been discussion of moving the squad from Landover, Md., to a stadium inside the District. But Mayor Vincent Gray would like the team to consider changing its name before any relocation discussion.

Grosso, an independent, says he has the support of at least two other council members for his non-binding resolution.

"It's been a long time that we’ve had this name associated with Washington," Grosso told the Washington Post, "and I think its time we take a stand and change it."

In his resolution, Grosso writes that the city's name has been dishonored by its association with the Redskins moniker:

"Because it is well known in America and in nations afar that American Indians have experienced utmost suffering and disrespect over the years," the resolution reads.

In place of Redskins, Grosso suggests the team be called the Redtails, which was the nickname for the Tuskeegee Airmen, the aviators who broke the color barrier for U.S. military pilots in World War II.

I'm okay with a name change that works with the fight song (like Dragons).

However, I will note that this political body has no power over the Washington Redskins.

I'm with you on the fight song thing.

And I think the council is only getting involved by telling Dan Snyder, "If you want a stadium back to DC, change the name." They indeed have no power over a private institution.

Still, they should change the name.

I doubt that Danny Boy wants back into DC. He has a sweet gig where he is now, that includes owning the stadium.

I can't imagine trying to get to a game in DC.

The whole thing is stupid.

Also -- red tails. That's when you eat out a girl's hemorrhoids, right?

Frager's Hardware in Cap Hill burns down. On her drive home last night, Missus RC said she could see the smoke from the highway.

Streetcar Expected To Make First Appearance On H Street NE This Week

An actual, real-life streetcar will make an appearance on H Street NE as soon as this week, barring any weather issues.

NBC4 reports that the D.C. Department of Transportation will move a streetcar from the Anacostia facility to H Street NE near Union Station on Friday. Testing will begin on either Saturday or Monday.

After years of delays, DDOT said in November that streetcar service on the H Street-Benning Road line would begin sometime in 2014. First, testing must take place to get people on the busy corridor — known for its love of jaywalking and double-parking — accustomed to the streetcar. After completion of a certification process, which could take months, passenger service can begin after 30 days. Mayor Vince Gray, however, promised passenger service by February, a goal DDOT says they will work to meet.

DDOT has already tested a hi-rail vehicle, which simulates what a streetcar does, on H Street NE. It took an hour to go five blocks. Another test is scheduled for today.

Man, you have been gone! H St construction is done. And they're running trains on the Silver Line now to prep for the opening in a couple weeks.

DC mass transit has finally caught up with 1957!!!
