hit ctrl-K and your cursor should jump to the upper-right text box, which defaults to google in my ff browsers.

But ... this thread is about Chrome, and Chrome is faster than FF.  Why go halfway?  Does Matt need all the FF plugins?  Seems unlikely if he's coming from IE.

The Firefox thread is too far back and I'm lazy. No, you can add any search engine to IE and you can't in google.

Chrome is beta and doesn't have any plugins yet. It's incompatible with a few, rare sites. But it is damn promising. (It's the browser I use when in Windows on my computer.) Firefox is fine.

As for the search engine, you can change that. Is this helpful?

There's a way in IE you can search with nearly any search engine, plug in the URL for the engine with a test search, and then IE installs the search engine for you. It's really good.

You can integrate any search engine into FF.  I don't know why you think otherwise.  It's actually super easy.

My point was predicated on Matt not wanting or needing plugins.

The only problem I've had with chrome is a known bug -- it can't access SSL sites when it's behind an authenticated proxy (e.g. the one at my work).

More than one homepage in FF:

Options-->Main-->
Under Homepage click "Use current pages" when you have your browser the way you wish to start.

I also use the "show my windows and tabs from last time"...it's about 7.9 million times better than IE's stupid "Do you want to open these tabs next time?"

Wait, you mean in Chrome, where you go wrench-icon->options->basics tab and it's the first option where you have three choices: use current page(s) / use home page / restore last open tabs?

And the "Default Search" section is on that very same wrench->options->basic tab, and includes a dropdown of two dozen standard search engines and allows you to add your own using the manage->add buttons.

I like Chrome's default homepage, which shows thumbnails of your 9 most frequently-visited sites. I hope a lot of that stuff trickles back to Safari (Chrome uses the same rendering engine as Safari: WebKit).
