FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German mail company Deutsche Post has inadvertently issued stamps bearing the image of Adolf Hitler's former deputy, Rudolf Hess, the company said on Wednesday.

Deutsche Post printed 20 stamps with Hess next to a bouquet of flowers as part of a service which allows clients to order custom-made envelopes, a company spokesman said.

"It is very unfortunate. But it happened," the spokesman said. "I presume it came from the far-right scene. But those 20 envelopes won't shake up German democracy."

The stamps would be offensive to Jewish groups and embarrassing to Germans anxious to live down the country's Nazi past.

The company said it would make every effort to avoid a repeat of the incident.

The Hess blunder was not the first time customers had tried to order stamps commemorating Nazi leaders, the spokesman said.

Earlier this year, the company intercepted a request to have stamps printed featuring Hitler as a small child, he said.

The latest delivery stemmed from a private order made in March, a few weeks before Hess's birthday, he added.

Hess, who served as Hitler's deputy before he flew to Britain in 1941 on an apparent peace mission, was tried at Nuremberg for war crimes and sentenced to life in Berlin's Spandau prison.

He was the only prisoner in the vast complex for the last 21 years and was guarded by jailers from occupying Allied powers until he committed suicide in 1987 aged 93.

Yay!  Nazi's!  Just as the Justice Department decides to ship off an 88 year old man to his kangaroo court death.  John Demjanjuk got fucked on May 19th.  Been fighting for years to stay in the US, and we finally said no today.

Actually, he won't even get a kangaroo court.  Israel tried him and issued his death sentence...then, strangely, threw the sentence out, citing that there was enough reasonable doubt to let him go.  And we know they aren't fucking around, so maybe Demjanjuk's claims are right -- it is mistaken identity and he is also a camp survivor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Demjanjuk

No matter if he is, though, because we just bounced him out of the country.  But with Israel unwilling to take the case up again, and no other country willing to take him, he's going to be stuck in the US as a nameless, faceless nobody.  No Social Security, no credit, nothing.  Totally stranded at 88.

At which point it's rumored that the more ambitious elements of the Jewish Nazi hunters will simply take him out.  It'll be open season.

interesting article.  what it never fully explained to me is how "Demjanjuk admitted that the scar under his armpit was an SS tattoo which he removed after the war. " yet he maintains ... what?  Is he saying he wasn't an SS guard?  Or that as a prisoner he was pressured into "volunteering" and that he wasn't that bad a guard?

His latest legal trouble arose from the accusation that he was a guard.  Well, wasn't he?

Of course he was a Nazi.  1951's when we brought over all the "reformed" Nazi's to keep them out of Soviet hands.

Just like Pope Benedict.
There will come a day for every man when he will relish the prospect of eating his own shit. That day has yet to come for me.
